About the Seth Thomas “banjo” Clock

Title: Seth Thomas “Banjo” Clock Model: A Collector’s Guide

The Seth Thomas “Banjo” clock, introduced in the late 19th century around 1876, is a quintessential example of American ingenuity and craftsmanship. This unique timepiece stands out among its contemporaries as a mantel clock, designed to be placed on shelves or tables rather than mounted on walls.

The “Banjo” clock’s distinctive design is characterized by an elongated case resembling a banjo instrument. The clock face sits atop a slender, curved body with a narrow waist and flared sides, evoking the shape of a traditional banjo. Typical case materials include mahogany, walnut, and rosewood, adding to the clock’s aesthetic appeal and value.

The “Banjo” clock is highly collectible due to its rarity, intricate design, and historical significance. As one of Seth Thomas’ earliest novelty clocks, it represents a departure from traditional mantel clock designs and serves as an excellent conversation piece for enthusiasts. Notable features include a finely crafted brass pendulum bob in the shape of a banjo head, a silvered dial with Roman numerals, and a coiled-spring movement that provides a smooth and reliable timekeeping experience.

While exact production numbers are not available, it is safe to say that the Seth Thomas “Banjo” clock is relatively scarce compared to more common models. As such, collectors should be prepared to pay a premium for this captivating piece of American horological history. Provenance, condition, and restoration quality will also significantly impact its value in the marketplace.
