Jul 2021 – #99 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “World”, ca. 1910. ST made these clocks with 15-day and 30-day time-only movements; I think this is a 15-day model but cannot be sure without running it for the duration. The 32-inch case is veneered in oak with a medium stain and a clean but old finish. The dial glass is old but possibly a replacement; the lower glass is likely original with gilt trim. The dial is beginning to flake and is faded and lightly soiled. The hands are correct. The double-spring movement is signed (behind the crosspiece) and is running with the correct pendulum bob and stick. There is a white label on the backwall just below the dial, and a brass beat scale at the bottom. A date stamp of 1907 on the back but it looks suspicious. These clocks ain’t as popular as they used to be, when everyone had to have one. Several recent sales at $225.

Jul 2020 – 142 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Windsor No. 3” ca. 1917. Like me, you probably haven’t seen this clock before. the Seth Thomas “Dana”, which always had an adamantine finish. I can find no sales records for this pretty little It is shown in Ly’s book, Vol. 1 on Seth Thomas clocks on page 507. An 11-inch mahogany case with a “dull rubbed finish”, a “dull gilt sash and mat” dial behind a convex glass. The ST No. 89 movement runs 8 days and strikes the hours and half-hours on a cathedral gong. Apparently refinished in 1983, and it looks and sounds great.

The movement is signed and bears the same number (48763) as the pendulum bob. The movement also bears the name of R. Kaiser, an acclaimed movement designer for the Seth Thomas Clock Co.

Jan 2020 – 51 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Violin” reproduction, ca. 1975. The Violin was a special-order only by Seth Thomas, never included in a catalog. Perhaps no other model has been copied as much as the famed (and extremely rare) This one was made by E.N. Harvell in the 1970’s (although there is no signature) and is about as close to an original as you can get. His reproductions are featured in Ly’s Vol. 2 of Seth Thomas Clocks & Movements on page 746. 29 inches tall, 13 5/8 inches wide at the base, in walnut with a beautiful finish. The glass matches the original; the lyre 8-day time-and-strike movement is an original Seth Thomas movement, as is the gong and pendulum assembly; it is running and striking. There is a Seth Thomas label on the inside bottom. The dial is an original painted dial, touched up and sealed, but chipping is evident under the finish. It appears to be stable; there is an ST logo and ST hands. If you want a violin clock this is as good as it gets. Horton’s sold a couple of violin reproductions in the last 5 years, one of which was very similar to this one, for $855 in 2014. $500-$1000. Viewing on a smart phone? Turn it sideways!
