About the Seth Thomas “Column Clock” Clock

The Seth Thomas “Column Clock,” produced by the renowned Seth Thomas Clock Company in Thomaston, Connecticut around 1875, is a distinctive example of American craftsmanship from the Victorian era. This weight-driven shelf clock features an 8-day time and strike mechanism, with a height of 32 inches.

The clock’s case is elegantly veneered in mahogany, showcasing an original finish that exhibits wear in several areas, particularly on the base. Some veneer damage can be observed on the base and top right return molding. The dial has been repainted, but the original hands remain intact.

The clock’s shell columns are in excellent condition, adorned with gilt caps and bases that add to its overall appeal. Both tablets are original, albeit with some minor loss. The lower tablet may have undergone restoration at some point in its history. A signed lyre movement can be found within the case, accompanied by a nice label inside the case that attests to its authenticity.
