About the Seth Thomas “Column Shell” Clock
The Antique Seth Thomas “Column Shell” Clock, manufactured around 1863, presents an early version of this renowned model, predating the renaming of Plymouth Hollow to Thomaston in 1865. This clock stands at a consistent height of 32 inches with two doors and features a unique shell pattern on the half-columns adorned with gilt capitals and plinths, along with three period glasses.
Both tablets show signs of age, while the rosewood veneer exhibits some chipping and missing pieces on the left side of the base, as well as a separation at the top left cornice. The contoured painted metal dial displays some soiling but remains intact without any visible chipping. The 8-day time-and-strike lyre movement is signed Plymouth Hollow and appears to be functioning, although the strike side was not tested due to the absence of the weight hook.
A partial label inside confirms its origin from Plymouth Hollow. This antique clock comes without weights or a pendulum bob, but compatible weights can be found in Parts, #902, available at an additional cost. Despite some minor imperfections, this early example of the Seth Thomas “Column Shell” Clock remains a noteworthy addition to any collection.

Antique Seth Thomas Column Shell Clock
Jan 2021 – 97 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Column Shell”, ca. 1863. This is an early example of this model, made before Plymouth Hollow was renamed Thomaston in 1865. Thomas made this model in many styles, all 32 inches tall with two doors and three glasses. Here we have a shell pattern on the half-columns with gilt capitals and plinths and three period glasses – notably, both tablets appear to be period. The rosewood veneer is in excellent shape with some chipping and missing pieces on the left side of the base; there is some separation of the cornice at the top left. The contoured painted metal dial shows some soiling but no chipping. The 8-day time-and-strike lyre movement is signed Plymouth Hollow and is running, but I did not check the strike side as the weight hook is missing. There is half a label inside, but enough to show the Plymouth Hollow origin. clock comes without weights or a pendulum bob; weights that will work in this clock can be found in Parts, #902, and purchased at the listed price. A very nice early example.
