About the Seth Thomas “Gingerbread” Clock
Introducing the Antique Seth Thomas “Gingerbread” Clock, a distinctive timepiece that graced American homes in the late 19th century. The Seth Thomas Clock Company produced this model in 1893, characterized by its impressive 25-inch walnut case. The clock’s clean and slightly unpolished exterior houses an old paper dial bearing the ST logo, while the hands remain authentic to the original design.
The clock features a working level at the bottom, although the thermometer at the top is missing. The ST head-and-shoulders movement is signed and operational, regulated by a nickel ST pendulum bob that strikes an steel wire gong. Additionally, there is a separate alarm that strikes on a steel bell. A label on the inside bottom provides further information about the clock’s origin.
Another variant of this model, dating approximately to 1880, showcases an oak-veneered kitchen wall clock measuring 28 inches. This rarer version is one of only a few produced by Seth Thomas. The thermometer at the top and level at the bottom are functional in this instance, although the thermometer’s bulb is broken. The dial is old paper, signed by Seth Thomas, and the 8-day, time-and-strike movement is operational. The hour/half-hour strike will sound on a brass bell with some assistance. This clock also includes an alarm, albeit untested, and an ST pendulum bob. Despite some signs of age and wear, such as chipping veneer and dark varnish, these Antique Seth Thomas “Gingerbread” Clocks remain captivating examples of American horology from the Victorian era.
