About the Seth Thomas “Hanging Regulator No. 17” Clock
The Seth Thomas “No. 17 Hanging Regulator Clock” is a striking example of American clockmaking craftsmanship from the 19th century. This timepiece features a painted tin dial with a brass surround advertising Bailly Watch Co./Cleveland, adorned with Roman numerals on the chapter ring and minute marks with triangles every five minutes. The seconds dial is located above the center, marked with Arabic numerals every 10 seconds.
The clock’s mechanical heart consists of 8-day time-only weight-driven brass works. It is set within a cast iron mounting frame and boasts a brass-faced pendulum. The case is crafted from cherry wood, showcasing a reeded door, cove moulding at the base with drop plinths featuring turned finials at each corner. Notable details include matching drop plinths in the center rear and a bull’s-eye rosette at the center front, as well as a crest with gallery, complete with matching plinths and finials.
The clock measures approximately 8.5 inches wide, 19.5 inches deep, and stands an impressive 67.5 inches high. This Seth Thomas No. 17 Hanging Regulator Clock has undergone refinishing and repainting of the dial, and while we do not guarantee its working order, it is currently operational as per available records (Duy Ly, 1996: 126, figs. 419-421).
