About the Seth Thomas “Lever No. 18” Clock

The Seth Thomas “Lever No. 18” clock, produced around 1939, is an intriguing piece of American horology history. This antique clock, a product of the renowned Seth Thomas Clock Company, features an 8-day, 11-jeweled lever movement (No. 5160) as detailed in their catalog.

The clock’s case is crafted from black Bakelite, a material known for its durability and resistance to heat. The case measures approximately 10 inches in diameter and features a hinged, moisture-resistant screw-down bezel for added protection. However, the cork seal has partially deteriorated, and the glass has been replaced with Plexiglas, which is not securely fastened within the bezel.

The clock boasts a sweep seconds hand and is currently running smoothly. The label on the side, “USAF, MX-771,” suggests a connection to the development of land-to-land missiles during that era, although it’s interesting to note that this might not be a ship’s clock as one might initially assume due to its lightweight plastic construction.

This Seth Thomas Lever No. 18 Clock is documented in “Seth Thomas Clocks & Movements,” Vol. 2, on page 777. The clock comes with an 8-inch silver-plated dial etched in black and a wall mounting back panel, complete with the original key. Although not currently running, this antique timepiece offers a captivating glimpse into mid-20th century American clockmaking.
