About the Seth Thomas “Mark-I” Clock

The Seth Thomas “Mark-I Boat Clock” is a distinctive timepiece, manufactured by the renowned Seth Thomas Clock Company in Thomaston, Connecticut, in 1941. This clock, with an eight-day, spring-driven movement, features a black phenolic case and a 3.5-inch dial that bears the emblem “U.S. Navy” along with the serial number 15485.

Mounted on a mahogany board, this clock is accompanied by two additional instruments: a barometer manufactured by Fee & Stemwedel, dated 1942, and a compass made by Sherrill Research Corporation. The clock’s black phenolic case, as well as the barometer, exhibit the characteristic mottling that develops over time due to ageing.

The dial of the Seth Thomas “Mark-I Boat Clock” remains in excellent condition, while the luminous paint on the hands and dial has darkened, adding a unique patina to this historical piece. All three instruments show signs of wear consistent with their age and use, making them valuable artifacts that offer a glimpse into maritime history.
