About the Seth Thomas “Merrimac” Clock
The “Merrimac” clock, produced by the Seth Thomas Clock Company in Thomaston, Connecticut around 1935, is a distinctive timepiece that showcases the company’s maritime-inspired design. This 8-day, brass marine clock features a No 10 twin-spring movement and an old, tarnished brass case with no damage or losses. The painted metal dial has been preserved but the numbers have been reinforced, and the small seconds hand is absent.
Another variation of the “Merrimac” is a ship’s clock, also from Seth Thomas, which strikes both time and a ship’s bell. This model features a brass case with radial handles resembling a ship’s wheel, mounted to a pine board for wall hanging. The 5-inch silvered dial has minimal tarnishing, and the movement ticks and strikes, although it was not tested long term.
A third version of the “Merrimac” is a 30-hour ship’s bell brass clock, produced in 1938. This model boasts a very good original metal finish with minor tarnish on the silver plate dial. The movement stamps 38-7 and appears to tick and strike briskly on a large brass bell, although it is not shown. Each of these “Merrimac” clocks offers a unique blend of maritime charm and precise timekeeping.
