About the Seth Thomas “No. 8043” Clock
Title: Seth Thomas No. 8043 Clock Model: A Collector’s Guide
The Seth Thomas No. 8043 is a magnificent mantel clock that showcases the company’s craftsmanship and innovation during the late 19th century. This model, produced between approximately 1880 and 1900, belongs to the category of American mantel clocks, designed for placement on a shelf or mantelpiece rather than against a wall.
The No. 8043 clock exhibits an elegant and intricate design, with its case primarily crafted from mahogany wood. The clock face is framed by a decorative swag motif, adding to the overall aesthetic appeal. The dial features Roman numerals and is enclosed within a glass panel, providing a clear view of the timepiece’s inner workings.
This model is particularly collectible due to its unique features and exceptional craftsmanship. One such feature is the finely-detailed engraved decoration on the waist section, which showcases Seth Thomas’ attention to detail. Additionally, the No. 8043 boasts a Westminster chime movement, adding a melodious touch to its functionality.
Notable features of the Seth Thomas No. 8043 clock include its precision-engineered brass movement and the quality of its pendulum and weights. The pendulum, suspended from a beautiful brass bob, swings in a mesmerizing arc while regulating the clock’s timekeeping accuracy.
For collectors seeking a representative piece of American clockmaking history, the Seth Thomas No. 8043 offers an attractive combination of design, craftsmanship, and functionality, making it a valuable addition to any antique collection.

Antique Seth Thomas & Sons No. 8043 Clock
Jan 2020 – 324 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas Sons & Co. “No. 8043”, ca. 1876. An offshoot of the Seth Thomas Clock Co. founded in 1865, with clocks manufactured in Thomaston CT but marketed in New York. They primarily made French imitation clocks with round movements, which were housed in bronzed or gilt metal cases such as found here. By 1879 the company was bought back by the Seth Thomas Clock Co. The round movements subsequently were used in crystal regulators. This model is 16 inches tall with a bronze finish and dark accents; the bronze finish is still evident, but worn; it desperately needs a thorough cleaning. It has an Egyptian motif. The porcelain dial is signed “Mitchell Vance & Co., N.Y.” and is badly chipped at the 7 position. The minute hand is an improper replacement; the dial glass is beveled. The signed movement is not even close to running, and may be beyond saving – it has been rebushed already. This clock’s value is in the case, which I have not seen before; there are no sales listed on the Antique Clocks Price Guide or on LiveAuctioneers.
