About the Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 8” Clock
The Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 8” wall clock, crafted by the renowned Seth Thomas Clock Company of Thomaston, Connecticut, showcases an intricate design that combines functionality with aesthetic appeal. This timepiece features an 8-day, weight-driven movement, accompanied by a perpetual calendar and a walnut and burl walnut case adorned with a canopy top, glazed pendulum aperture, and painted metal dials. The damascened pendulum bob adds a unique touch to the overall design.
The clock’s case retains its original finish, displaying characterful chips on each of the upper finials and a small chip on the pendulum door. There is some minor inpainting on the time dial, and the original canopy has been reattached. A repair to the lower portion of the pendulum rod where the adjustment assembly attaches, as well as a period Seth Thomas replacement for the horizontal time dial support, are noticeable features. The dial has been rotated slightly, with the old original holes matching the dial visible when the dial is off.
The clock’s original damascened bob and cast iron weight stamped “No. 8 OFFICE CAL” remain intact, adding to its authenticity. This large and impressive clock, particularly handsome in walnut, offers a captivating blend of historical charm and practical utility for any collector or enthusiast.
