About the Seth Thomas “Parlor Calendar No. 1 early” Clock

Introducing the Antique Seth Thomas “Parlor Calendar No. 1 early” clock, a unique piece dating back to approximately 1863. This model is distinguished by its 33-inch veneered rosewood case with some signs of chipping and potential re-veneering. The clock features two original glasses and dials, both of which have been touched up over time, showcasing the dedication of previous owners to preserving this antique piece.

The clock’s decorative middle panel bears the imprint “Allison & Bedford,” suggesting it once served a business. The signed Seth Thomas (ST) weight-driven lyre movement is in good working condition after a minor modification, with the calendar advancing correctly. However, the strike mechanism requires attention and the day of the week hand does not advance, necessitating adjustment.

The clock comes with a good black and gold label on the door, and the original weights have been replaced with 7-lb weights for optimal functioning. This early version of the Seth Thomas “Parlor Calendar No. 1” is uncommon, with the most recent known sale occurring at Schmidt’s Antiques in 2018. For collectors who appreciate antique clocks in original condition, this piece offers a unique opportunity to own a piece of American clockmaking history.

Antique Seth Thomas Parlor Calendar No. 1 early Clock

Jan 2021 – 132 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Parlor Calendar No. 1”, ca. 1863. A second example of this uncommon calendar clock, this one in unrestored condition. The veneer is flaking badly on the top and at the bottom. The finish is, well, filthy. A serious cleaning is needed. Both glasses are original, as are the dials. They have been touched up repeatedly, you’ve got to admire someone’s efforts to save these dials. The hands are correct. The clock evidently served a business, as indicated by the “Allison & Bedford” imprint on the decorative middle panel. In contrast to the case, the ST weight-driven lyre movement is bright and shiny and running like a champ, but the strike doesn’t know when to stop and will need attention. The calendar date hand advances but the day of the week is not advancing and will need adjustment. Note that the weights are correct on this clock. Good black and gold label on the door. If you like ’em in original condition this one is for you.
