Pendulum is correct, there are 4 metal feet and a full back door. The clock is one of a series of clocks, all very similar in looks, all about the same size, most with columns on each side, that were named for small cities in Mass., & Conn. Mr. Ly did not include this clock in the City Series section of his Seth Thomas book, but it should have been. Check the City Series clocks, Salem, Sterling, and Clinton, all cities in Mass. just like Berkeley, and all are very similar clocks. Ly-Seth Thomas #1071.

  • Antique Seth Thomas “Beijing City Series” Model Clock

    Antique Seth Thomas

Catalog Description: Seth Thomas City Series Clock, Beijing Model, c. 1875 original reverse painted glass in the bottom shows a picture of some pheasants, and the case of this clock is in nice condition. It even has a nice label behind the gong on which it strikes. Plus, the large eight day striking Seth Thomas movement inside runs on the uncommon 24 hour system. The hands on this clock run at half speed, so one revolution of the hour hand signifies the passage of an entire day. It points vertically at midnight and noon, and horizontally at six o’clock. Also, the minute hand takes a full two hours to make one sweep, so it points horizontally on the half hour. Special gearing inside this clock allows for this interesting format. The dial is marked accordingly in Chinese characters, as well as numbered from 1 to 12 twice around in roman numerals.

  • Antique Seth Thomas “Bee” Model Clock

    Antique Seth Thomas

Catalog Description: Seth Thomas mantle clock, “Bee”, C. 1884. An ebony cabinet case, marqueterie panel with flowers and the “bee”, from whence the name comes. Carved panels above and below the dial, railing around the top, etched and cutouts on both sides, fluted each side of the front edges. 4 turned wood feet. A lot going on with this small 14″ high clock. French sash with beveled glass, 4.5″ porcelain dial is excellent, and signed. The 15 day movement is signed several places, the most interesting is, “R. Kaisor”. I have seen the name on other Seth Thomas movements but have no idea what it means unless he is given credit for designing the clock. Strikes half hours on a standing cathedral gong. The movement could stand to be serviced, it has been some time. The bonus in this clock is a secret compartment above the movement, inside the case. Ly-Seth Thomas #1297.

  • Antique Seth Thomas “Bee” Model Clock

    Antique Seth Thomas

Catalog Description: Seth Thomas Clock Co. early shelf clock, ca 1881, with several unusual features. It is called the “Bee” because there is a bee and flowers on the front of the ebony case. This clock will need some restoration before it canregain its original beauty. The black case has had extra paint put on thatin my opinion should be removed, or a lot of it removed. This model is prettyrare and very different than the usual Seth Thomas’s mantle clocks, and hasalways been a favorite of Seth Thomas collectors. It is not large at14 inches high, front has 2 carved panels of flowers and leaves, again theplace for bees. Around the dial are flowers, marquetery inlay of flowersand 1 bee. The inlay is suffering and will need some remedial repairsand regluing of some of the thin inlay. 4 turned feet, 2 turned finials ontop. A silver plaque on the base says, “To Mother, from the Boys, Xmas 1881”.American sash, good porcelain dial, correct hands, dial is signed. Frenchstyle 8 day movement, (signed by Seth Thomas), strikes a standing gong, hasan outside count wheel and the correct pendulum. Case is stamped inside, “290”, which I suspect has a meaning about the date it was made. Above themovement is a secret compartment (in plain view) with a hinged door. It isdifferent. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 1297.

  • Antique Seth Thomas “Baso” Model Clock

    Antique Seth Thomas

Catalog Description: Seth Thomas tambour with a mahogany adamantine finish, “Baso”, ca 1917. The case style is not one we see often, in fact, I never have. It took a hit or two in the ride from Texas. I touched 3-4 small nicks with a red mahogany pencil stain and now the nicks are hard to find. The 8 day movement is running up a storm, striking the half hours on a cathedral bell. Convex dial and convex glass. The catalogs call the dial a “New convex 5-inch dial”. It is different, I guess paint on metal, but typical of Seth Thomas dials, it is beginning to flake in the lower half. Movement is signed with the ST logo and “89”. Ly-Seth Thomas #1257.
