About the Seth Thomas “Chime Clock No. 261” Clock
The Seth Thomas “Chime Clock No. 261,” produced around 1920, is an exquisite example of American craftsmanship. This quarter chime clock features a striking 8-bell mechanism that produces either Whittington or Westminster tunes.
The clock’s case, veneered in mahogany and adorned with floral inlay, adds an elegant touch to its design. While it has been professionally restored, the original silvered dial remains hidden beneath an imitation porcelain dial cover. A unique feature of this model is a ‘constant’ or ‘change’ switch on the right side of the case, which is best left on ‘constant.’
Another variant of this clock, dated 1918, showcases intricate marqueterie inlay on the mahogany front panel and an engraved and silvered presentation plaque dedicated to Maj. General C. T Inett by his comrades on May 18, 1918. This version strikes on a single bell on the hour. Both models stand tall at 13 feet.
Both versions are in excellent original condition, with the 1920 model having undergone a thorough restoration process and the 1918 model maintaining its pristine state after being cleaned and kept running. These Seth Thomas Chime Clock No. 261 models are not just timekeepers but also pieces of historical artistry, each with their unique stories to tell.
