About the Seth Thomas “Columbus” Clock
The “Columbus” mantel clock, manufactured by the Seth Thomas Clock Company around 1884, is an exquisite example of American craftsmanship during the Victorian era. This particular model showcases a distinctive walnut city series finish that has been preserved in very clean condition, maintaining its original charm.
The clock’s dial, while displaying only minor wear with a small paint chip in the center, is noteworthy for its exceptional quality, surpassing average standards typically found on Seth Thomas clocks. The original hands and pendulum further contribute to the authenticity of this timepiece.
While one small finial that fits on top is missing, collectors may find a suitable replacement by referring to Tran Ly’s book on Seth Thomas clocks. This minor imperfection does not detract from the overall appeal of this 8-day time/strike mantel clock, standing at a height of 22.5 inches. Whether you are a seasoned collector or a novice enthusiast, the “Columbus” clock offers an opportunity to own a well-preserved piece of American horological history.
