About the Seth Thomas “Cottage Extra” Clock

Introducing the Seth Thomas “Cottage Extra,” a collector’s item from the late 19th century. This model, produced by the renowned Seth Thomas Clock Company around 1879, showcases an early shelf clock design with later improvements. The clock stands at approximately 15.5 inches high and boasts a mahogany veneered case with an original dark finish, although it may exhibit minor nicks due to age.

The clock features an 8-day movement, a signed gong base, a coil gong, and an iron bell that rings upon striking. The clock also includes an original alarm movement, old brass bob, and a complete label inside the case. Notably, this model has undergone refinishing of the gold on the case and the original zinc dial was “improved” to suit a previous owner who was an excellent mechanic but lacked a painter’s touch.

Another variation of the “Cottage Extra,” produced around 1870, is crafted from rosewood. This model also features an 8-day movement and time and strike functionality. The case has been refinished and sports a clean paper label inside. The reverse paint glass of a wading bird and the dial have been professionally restored to appear aged.

A rare variation, the Seth Thomas miniature “Cottage Extra” from around 1875, is unique for its oak case. This particular model stands at approximately 9.5 inches high and includes time and alarm functionality, a 30-hour movement, and a repainted dial. The label inside the case is complete, and the mirror tablet and upper glass appear original.

Lastly, there exists a Seth Thomas mantle clock “Cottage Extra” from around 1879. This model features a near-perfect walnut case

An early shelf clock with later improvements. The gold was refreshed and the original zinc dial was “improved” to suit the previous owner. He was an excellent mechanic but did not have the painters touch. The clock does not look bad on the shelf. Very nice 15.5″ high mahogany veneered case with the original dark finish, has the usual corner and edge nicks, but is certainly acceptable. With a little effort it could be a very nice shelf clock. Original glasses, door knob, alarm movement and iron bell on which it rings, 8 day movement and a signed gong base and coil gong. Old brass bob and a complete label inside. LySeth Thomas No. 650.
