About the Seth Thomas “Double Dial” Clock

Introducing the Seth Thomas “Double Dial” clock, a distinctive timepiece from the early 1920s. This 30-inch tall hallway clock, modeled in quarter-sawn oak, is designed to be visible from either direction, making it ideal for public spaces such as schools.

The clock features two dials, one of which has a minor paint flake, and both retain their original hands. The movement within the case is a large No. 86 double spring wind mechanism, known for its robustness and reliability.

Notably, this design was primarily produced for use in schools and public buildings, displaying the time in two directions. The clock case itself measures 19″ square, with an additional 10″ provided by the wall bracket. Despite some minor wear and tear, such as loose joints due to exposure to moisture, the clock remains largely original and complete.

This particular Seth Thomas “Double Dial” clock carries the name of its original purchaser, Lockwood & Almquist, Inc., New York, on one of the dials. While it may require some restoration, this unique piece is ready to be hung and adds a historical touch to any space. The Ly-Seth Thomas number for this model is 526.

Seth Thomas, "Double Dial" - Wall Bracket, C. 1922.

Seth Thomas, “Double Dial” – Wall Bracket, C. 1922.

Made principally for use in the nation’s schools, time is shown in two directions. Overall, including the wall bracket the clock is 30″, the clock case itself is only 19″ square. This clock is original and complete. It has a 30 day, time only, large double spring Movement No. 86, and it running just fine. You might know that I would photograph the best side. The dial showing is very nice while the one not showing has oxidized slightly around the lower half on the outside of the time ring, and that means there is a little flaking. The numerals are still fine. The old oak case is in good condition and should not require a lot of the buyer’s time. The glasses should be stabilized a little better but otherwise it is ready to hang. Ly-Seth Thomas #526.

This clock stood out on an open porch and has gotten wet and the joints are all a bit loose. The dials both bear the name of the company that ordered the clock from ST: Lockwood & Almquist, Inc, New York. The pendulum has lost its brass cover, but the lead insert is intact. The movement itself appears complete, but will need service. This clock displays the same time in both directions, using large double spring movement #86, and was commonly used in the New York Public School System. Height 30 inches
