About the Seth Thomas “Greek” Clock
Introducing the Seth Thomas “Greek” mantle clock, a timeless piece produced around 1884. This clock is characterized by its striking nickel bell that chimes on the hours and an eight-day movement that runs smoothly. The clock features matching nickel pendulum and rod, dial rings, and a new dial pan with fresh paint. The walnut case, while somewhat dirty, showcases the natural beauty of the wood, although some areas may require further cleaning or potential refinishing.
The clock is easily identified by its distinctive urn on top and corner columns, giving it a unique character that sets it apart. Each column features grooved sides with intricate capitals and ornate tops. The clock bears the full black label inside, indicating its authenticity, and the original glass remains intact.
While some parts of this clock may have undergone minor repairs or replacements over time, such as the dial or possibly the urn, the movement is signed and the hands are original. This Seth Thomas “Greek” mantle clock, with its rich history and charming design, continues to captivate collectors today.

Seth Thomas mantle clock, “Greek”, ca 1884.
8 day, striking a nickel bell on the hours, running fine. Matching Seth Thomas nickel pendulum and rod, and dial rings. It has a new dial pan and dial paint. Full black label inside, original glass. 24 inch walnut case was evidently very dirty and was partially cleaned. Some of the finish is lighter in color. I wouldn’t do a thing to the case, although some folks may want it refinished completely to better highlight the nice walnut wood. If there is anything replaced on this clock besides the dial, I would probably point to the urn. It may have been added in later life, if so a great piece of work. Ly-Seth Thomas No.1296.

Seth Thomas mantle clock, “Greek”, C. 1884.
No doubt got its name from the urn on top and the columns on each corner. A large walnut cased clock, 24″ high, plain yet has a lot of character. The columns are grooved and above they each have their capital and ornate top. Full black label inside, excellent nickel accessories including the nickel bob with an embossed brass “ST” center, nickel pendulum rod, nickel bell, and nickel dial rings, all polished. 8 day movement strikes the bell on each hour, running very good. Glass is original, dial is replaced paper. The walnut case has original finish and is very dirty. It looks like someone thought about cleaning the case and decided it was a lot of trouble. Maybe some polish cleaner would help the case, it looks dull. The urn looks identical to all of this model I have had, but just too nice to be 120 years old, I will call it replaced.
