About the Seth Thomas “Hotel” Clock

Title: Seth Thomas Hotel Clock Model: A Collector’s Guide

The Seth Thomas “Hotel” clock, model number 17, is a remarkable mantel clock that graced homes and hotels alike during the late 19th century. This timepiece, produced between approximately 1885 and 1900, represents the pinnacle of American clockmaking craftsmanship in the Victorian era.

Characterized by its distinctive design, the Hotel clock features a case constructed primarily from walnut or mahogany, with intricate marquetry detailing on the front door and base. The rectangular dial is adorned with Arabic numerals, set against a polished brass background, and framed by an elaborate floral motif. The pendulum bob, often in the shape of a gavel or other novelty item, adds a unique touch to this already eye-catching design.

What sets the Seth Thomas Hotel clock apart for collectors is its rarity, exquisite craftsmanship, and historical significance. Its large size and novelty pendulum bob make it an impressive centerpiece in any antique collection. Furthermore, the Hotel clock’s association with the prestigious Seth Thomas Clock Company lends credibility to its value as a collector’s item. Notable features include the 8-day movement, which requires winding only once a week, and the striking Westminster chime on the hour.

Collectors of antique clocks would be remiss not to consider adding a Seth Thomas Hotel clock to their collection. Its combination of aesthetic appeal, historical importance, and exceptional craftsmanship make it an ideal addition for any serious collector.
