Title: Seth Thomas “New York College Series” Clock Model

The Seth Thomas “New York College Series” is a captivating mantel clock that graced homes during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, approximately between 1874 and 1935. This model stands out as one of the most sought-after antique clocks due to its unique design and historical significance.

Characterized by a distinctive case, the New York College Series clock typically features intricately carved wooden cases in mahogany or walnut, embellished with ivory dial faces and ornate brass pendulums. The design incorporates motifs reminiscent of Gothic Revival architecture, such as pointed arches, scrollwork, and other decorative elements, which reflect the Victorian era’s aesthetic sensibilities.

What sets the New York College Series apart in the realm of antique clock collecting is its association with prestigious educational institutions. These clocks were often commissioned by colleges and universities across the United States, including Yale University, Princeton University, Brown University, Columbia University, and Dartmouth College, among others. Each institution had their own unique version of the clock, making it an excellent conversation piece for collectors interested in academic history as well as horology.

Notable features include the high-quality construction, with brass movements that were precision engineered by Seth Thomas. The dial faces often display Roman numerals or Arabic numerals along with minute markers, while the pendulum is designed to swing back and forth beneath a glass dome. Additionally, many versions of this clock incorporate enamel or hand-painted scenes on the dial face that represent various aspects of the commissioning institution’s history or mission.

One of a set of 6. The catalogs say they were made in old oak only. Sorry, this one is a lovely walnut, 23 inches high, with the original glass and pendulum. As with all the clocks in this nice collection, the owner liked new, white, paper dials. A label inside and another on the back. 8 day striking half hours on a gong and alarms on a brass bell, running strong. Very nice clock. Ly-Seth Thomas No.1103.
