About the Seth Thomas “No. 1 Extra” Clock

The Seth Thomas “No. 1 Extra,” produced around 1875 by the renowned Seth Thomas Clock Company, is an exquisite example of American craftsmanship. This 8-day regulator timepiece showcases a distinctive walnut case, originally rosewood, that has undergone renovation with a cherry stain. The intricate veneering process on the curved surfaces, while not perfect due to the difficulty in applying it evenly, lends a unique character to this piece.

The dial of the clock has been professionally repainted and features original hands. Both glasses, the gilt pendulum rod, and the pendulum are all original components. The interior label, though slightly worn with some tears and losses, remains legible. The paper beat scale is intact, adding to the authenticity of this piece.

The clock boasts a 13-inch dial, brass trim, and a weight-driven mechanism, complete with a seconds bit. It stands tall at 42 inches, making it an impressive addition to any collection or office space. With its excellent interior label and nice overall condition, the Seth Thomas No. 1 Extra is a fine example of American clockmaking from the Victorian era.

The case has been reveneered in walnut with a cherry stain (would have been rosewood originally). It is very difficult to veneer these curved surfaces and as a result it is a bit uneven and is starting to lift in some areas. The dial has been professionally repainted. The hands are original. Both glasses are original, as are the gilt pendulum rod and pendulum There is label inside the case, with some tears and losses, but legible; paper beat scale is intact. It is difficult to estimate this clock; if it had the original veneer in good shape, it would be worth around 4000 dollars. From 10 feet away it looks great. Height 42 inches
