About the Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 1” Clock

Title: Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 1” Clock Model: A Collector’s Guide

The Seth Thomas Regulator No. 1 clock model, introduced in the mid-19th century during the Industrial Revolution era (approximately 1852), is a quintessential representation of American craftsmanship and horological innovation. This timepiece belongs to the regulator category, designed primarily for scientific purposes due to its ability to maintain consistent and accurate timekeeping.

The typical case materials used for the Regulator No. 1 include mahogany or walnut woods, adorned with brass ornaments and intricate inlays. The rectangular case design is a testament to the aesthetics of the Victorian era, while the robust construction ensures durability and longevity. The pendulum bob, often featuring an elegant glass sphere, hangs below the dial, suspended by a delicate brass chain.

What makes the Seth Thomas Regulator No. 1 clock collectible is its historical significance, exceptional craftsmanship, and accuracy. As one of the first mass-produced regulators in America, this model represents an essential milestone in American horology. Its distinctive design, coupled with the company’s reputation for precision engineering, makes it a sought-after item among antique clock collectors worldwide.

Notable features include the large dial (usually 12 inches or more in diameter), which provides ample space for easy time reading, and the adjustable brass-tuned pendulum, allowing for fine-tuning to keep accurate time. The Regulator No. 1’s minimalistic design, characterized by its lack of hour and minute hands, is another distinguishing feature that sets it apart from traditional mantel clocks.

Antique Seth Thomas Regulator No. 1 Clock

Jan 2022 – #98 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 1” An early No. 1 in less than perfect condition. The rosewood veneer has probably been redone on the bezel and oddly, the left and right sides of the bezel have been trimmed flat; the base is a less-than-perfect replacement. Both glasses are old and the tablet original, but with many losses. trim around the tablet also shows its age. The dial is a newer replacement in good shape, the hands are ST hands but not original to the clock. The 8-day, time-only movement is a modern replacement and unsigned; it runs for only a few minutes. ST weight and a modern pendulum and bob.

in very good original condition. The bezel has a couple of minor nicks, and there is the odd scrape in other places, but overall this is a nice clock. Note original dial has several flakes and is fragile to the touch. Retains original label in bottom of case; bottom cracked from where the weight went through once. Still and all a good early Seth Thomas clock. Note the influence that Silas Terry had on this model; see next lot. Height 36 inches

walnut, with restoration. This early model has the cord up over a pulley in the top of the case and the weight falls invisibly down the right side. The hands, pendulum and weight are original; the dial was professionally repainted around 40 years ago and looks original. There is a very nice gilt and black glass in the lower door, which was removed when the case was refinished, and is now held in with nails; it is quite old and was probably installed by the dealer when the clock was new. Note weight cord falls over top pulley, no additional pulley is used. 37 inches

C.1870, Seth Thomas, “Regulator No. 1, Extra, Striking”, as-found, in need of work.

See also lot 363 in this catalog; the striking model is truly uncommon and it is a surprise to have 2 of this model on offer. This one does need some attention: the case has been stripped and could use some more finish (the rosewood veneer is good with some small chips), the bottom of the clock is missing. The dial has been repainted with numerals a bit too bold. There are NO weights, no baffle, no beat scale and tablet is incorrect. Hands are original. For details on this model, and photos of the unique Terry style movement, see Tran Duy Ly’s book titled Seth Thomas Clocks, (1996), page 108. Height 38 inches

C.1875, Seth Thomas Clock, “Regulator No. 1 Extra, Striking”, 8-day, 2-weight wall clock in very good condition.

This nicely refinished rosewood veneered case is attractive, although sealer was not used and the grain is a bit open. There is a little raised veneer on a couple of small spots on the dial bezel and a small chip on one bezel joint. The numerals have been restored over the original surface, and some touch-up around winding holes by the Dial House, and the dial is very nice. (Camera has accentuated spots which are not visible in natural light). The hands and pendulum with gilt rod are original. The painted tablet has been restored on the original glass. The case has an excellent label. This clock came from the Frank Grosso collection several years ago. It is in good running order. This clock has a rosewood case in the original finish. It is missing numerous veneer pieces, mainly on the outer edges. The gold leaf Regulator glass is original and in excellent condition. It has two openings to see the gold gilt pendulum rod and the pendulum which is embossed with a scene and “Seth Thomas Clock Co. Plymouth Hollow, Ct.”. The 14″ dial has the original paint and has almost no flaws at all. The hour and minute hand are original but the hour hand has had just a bit nipped off the tip. The weight is original. The separator board between the weight and pendulum is missing. 8 day timepiece in good running order. 42″ tall.

Seth Thomas Clock Co. rare and early wall clock, “Regulator No. 1”, ca 1874.

It is not perfect, but you do not know how close it came to staying in my collection. This clock cannot help but increase in value over the years. First the bad; the second hand is not correct, a recast lead weight, some of the paint on the tablet was scraped away, and there is some rough veneer on the bezel. That is all. There are plenty of good things to brag about. My favorite is the embossed pendulum bob signed, “Seth Thomas Clock Co. / Plymouth Hollow, Ct.”, and several other things embossed on the bob also. The complete black and gold label on the weight chute partition is signed the same. There is a complete paper beat scale at the bottom, and it is extremely rare to find all those things in this good condition. Gold pendulum stick, large hands, door lock with key, and the original repainted dial, are all original to the clock. Rectangle unsigned 8 day weight movement is in good running condition. I have known of embossed pendulum bobs selling for almost as much as our minimum for the entire clock. I suppose if you need or want one, huh? Ly-Seth Thomas, pages 269-271.

Seth Thomas Clock Co., Thomaston, Conn., “Regulator No. 1” rosewood grained 8 day weight powered hanging time piece, c1870

There is nice graining on this refinished case, with just a some minor edge chips on the veneered bezel. The painted metal dial has been redone with Arabic numerals, and has filled hole for a cross brace not present in this case, definitely from another clock. The reverse paint tablet is restored, and the large inside Plymouth Hollow label is a black and white photocopy. The unsigned movement, with maintaining power, needs cleaning. Ht 34″

Original painted dial has turned a little yellow with some minor loss at the mounting screws and the winding arbor. Hands are original. Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 1”, ca 1875.

This clock is 8 day, one weight descending down the middle of the case behind a partition that slides up and down. Some of this model have labels on the sliding partition, this one doesn’t and not sure there ever was one. Great original painted glass has been rebacked to hold the very nice gold paint. Original old zinc dial has been repainted. The 34-inch mahogany or rosewood veneer case has survived extremely well with hardly any chips. There are some scrapes or scuffs from hauling, etc. but should cover with “Nu Life” polish. The 8 day movement is rectangle and almost identical to the later No. 2 movements. It is like the movement shown at Ly-Seth Thomas No.368. The movement is held by mounting blocks and was used in some of the early No. 2 regulators. Original flat iron weight, old brass pendulum. The clock, glass, and everything, is identical to the one pictured in Ly-Seth Thomas No.354.

Seth Thomas, "Regulator No. 1", C. 1875.

Seth Thomas, “Regulator No. 1”, C. 1875.

Rosewood veneered case is 34″ tall and in above average condition. The dial bezel is usually the place that has veneer problems. It has a place or two where the veneer was loose and glued back, a few small areas where the veneer is missing, but no visible repairs. They sanded those places, stained them, and are hardly noticeable. The edges are rough in a few places but overall the veneer looks real good There are a couple of places on the base where the edges were nicked, but for its age the clock is as good or better than you will find anywhere. Other good points; a complete and near perfect, black and gold label, including the paper beat scale at the bottom, on the sliding partition that separates the pendulum from the weight chute; an almost perfect tablet painting, with just a smidgen of paint loss. The original dial was apparently repainted years ago. The dial is attached to a circle of wood consisting of 9 pie shaped wood pieces. For whatever reason, one of the nine was replaced, of course it is under the dial and you can’t see it. The hands are correct replacements. The movement is 8 day, weight driven, time only with rectangular solid plates, maintaining power, and a Graham dead beat escapement. The pendulum bob appears to be original although was originally nickel plated, now brass colored. The stick is a very old replacement and the stick hanger a very well made replacement. The flat weight no doubt came with the movement. We have sold a few of these over the years and haven’t had any that were nicer. Ly-Seth Thomas #354.

Seth Thomas "Regulator No. 1", C. 1860-1863.

Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 1”, C. 1860-1863.

This is probably one of the first regulator clocks made by Seth Thomas. He purchased the bankrupt stock of Silas B. Terry in 1859 and began construction of his own line of regulators, this being the first. The round movement could well have been one of Silas B. Terry’s stock or made with the patterns and machinery purchased from him. It is very rare to find this movement in the Seth Thomas early regulators. Note how the weight is compounded in the top of the case using two pulleys, plus a third pulley holding the weight. Some restoration is needed to put the case back to original condition. The base will need to be made, order a seconds hand from Timesavers, and have the glass painted. There is no evidence that this case ever had a sliding partition separating the pendulum and weight and on which a label was placed. Instead there is a paper beat scale built into a small shelf on the door, and a label was put in the base. We believe the good zinc dial, bob, gold painted stick, and the flat weight, to be original to the clock. The case would be 34″ if the base were in place. The best pat of this clock is the original presentation tablet: “PRESENTED TO A. L. NICKERSON, BY FRIENDS, 1885” Also with nickel plated pendulum bob with damascene pattern. The hook for the weight got damaged, however a proper replacement is available from Timesavers.com, catalog No. 12183, for $2.75. Height 34 inches

Seth Thomas Clock Co., Plymouth Hollow, Conn., “Regulator No. 1”, 8 days, weight driven brass movement wall timepiece, c1862

The finish on the case is so alligatored it is difficult to determine what veneer was used. Our best guess is the veneer is rosewood. It is in as found condition with veneer missing on the bottom bracket and the right side. A piece is missing on the bottom bracket and a half round piece of molding on the right side. A section of the backboard is missing. The center area above the word “Regulator” in the original tablet is missing. Original hands. The wood pendulum rod for the embossed bob is missing. There is no seconds bit or weight. Ht 34″

Seth Thomas Clock Co., Plymouth Hollow, Conn., “Regulator No. 1” wall clock in a rosewood case, with an 8 days, weight driven timepiece movement, c1862.

This clock is an early Regulator No. 1 (early No. 2’s had no seconds dial). The clock has the unsigned rectangular movement (2 5/8″ by 4 1/4″). The dial is original with some flaking at the 5 numeral. The hands are original. The glass tablet is original and in excellent condition. The pendulum rod (visible bottom portion) is gilt as it should be. The embossed pendulum bob is impressed with a view of Plymouth Hollow, CT . The original Seth Thomas Plymouth Hollow label with directions indicates that the clock was sold to K. D. Sykes, a watchmaker or retailer in Manchester, England in the 1860’s. Seth Thomas Clock Co., Thomaston, Conn., “Regulator No. 1” rosewood 8 day weight driven time only wall clock, dated 1885

the rosewood case has had some restorations with various woods, and the #62A trapezoidal movement is correct for this early model, before it was known as the No. 2, The painted dial is very good, the nickel pendulum has a clear engraved pattern, the hands are correct, the front glass is wavy, the brass weight (perhaps should be nickel, also) has an old patina and a few small dents, and there is a good beat scale and partial paper label in the bottom. A small brass plate at the bottom indicates “W.P. Barrow, Torrington, Jany. 1889”. The January 1885 date code is stamped on the back. Ht 36″

Seth Thomas Clock Co., Thomaston, Conn., “Regulator No. 1”, 8 day, weight brass movement rosewood grained wall clock or timepiece, c1874

There is nice graining on the refinished case with just some minor edge chips on the veneered bezel. The painted metal dial has been redone and has a filled hole for a cross brace not present in this case, definitely from another clock. The reverse paint tablet is restored, and baffle board looks to be a thin sheet of plywood. The pendulum rod looks to be new. The hour hand looks to be a replacement as it is brass rather than steel.
