Title: Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 15” Clock Model: A Collector’s Guide

The Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 15” clock is a quintessential example of the American Regulator style, renowned for its precision and elegance. This timepiece is not designed to be a mantel or wall clock but rather a free-standing regulator, intended to be placed on a shelf or table due to its substantial size and weight.

Typical case materials for the Regulator No. 15 include mahogany, walnut, cherry, or rosewood, showcasing Seth Thomas’ commitment to quality and craftsmanship. The design is characterized by a tall, slender case with a brass-faced dial, Roman numerals, and seconds pendulum. The minute and hour hands often feature contrasting colors for improved legibility.

Produced primarily between the late 19th century and early 20th century, the Regulator No. 15 is a testament to Seth Thomas’ enduring influence during this era. Its collectible value stems from its historical significance, impeccable craftsmanship, and the rarity of finding one in excellent condition due to its fragile nature.

Notable features include the heavy brass pendulum bob suspended from a polished brass rod, the distinctive sweeping seconds hand, and the substantial weight required to ensure accurate timekeeping. The Regulator No. 15 also showcases Seth Thomas’ innovative use of interchangeable parts, which facilitated repairs and maintenance throughout the clock’s lifespan.

in walnut and burled veneers in very good original condition. The 14″ silvered dial has rubbed to brass over the years, and it would be easier to read if it were silvered. The mercury with the clock only fills around a third to half the thumb print jar, but it seems to keep time at that level. Otherwise this is a great clock, with original finish, weight, pendulum, hangers, hardware and so forth. The movement in the 15 is among the finest that Seth Thomas produced, with fine cut pinions, Graham escapement, robust pillars, and venier beat adjustment. This case has glass sides with counter framing like the finest regulators; it is really an imposing and impressive piece. Height 100 inches ( tallcase, grandfather )
