About the Seth Thomas “Rose Column” Clock

The Seth Thomas “Rose Column” clock, produced by the renowned Seth Thomas Clock Company in Thomaston, Connecticut around 1880, is a striking example of American craftsmanship from the late 19th century. This weight-driven shelf clock features an 8-day time and strike mechanism housed within a rosewood veneered case that has undergone minor repairs to the cornice and base moldings, as well as a refinishing process. The dial has been repainted using the original pan, while the hands remain original. The lyre movement is signed, and the clock boasts an authentic label within the case.

Another variant of this model, produced in Plymouth Hollow, Connecticut around 1860, showcases a mahogany veneer case with similar characteristics. This version features both original tablets in good condition, although the bottom glass exhibits some flaking while the center glass remains in exceptional condition. The dial, movement, weights, pendulum, and hands are all original components of this clock.

A third iteration, produced around 1875, also bears the “Rose Column” moniker and features an 8-day time/strike mechanism within a mahogany veneered case that is in nice condition with minor veneer losses on the base and left cornice molding. The clock’s original painted dial, tablets, movement, weights, pendulum, and hands contribute to its authenticity and charm. Each of these Seth Thomas “Rose Column” clocks stands at approximately 32 inches in height.
