About the Seth Thomas “Denver” Clock
Title: The Seth Thomas “Denver” Clock: A Collector’s Gem
The Seth Thomas “Denver” clock, crafted between 1865 and 1897, is a timeless example of American horological artistry. This mantel clock model showcases the company’s unwavering commitment to quality and innovation during its golden age.
Distinguished by its unique design, the Denver clock features an intricately carved walnut case adorned with delicate acanthus leaves, floral motifs, and rosettes. The case is supported by four cabriole legs ending in pad feet, a hallmark of the Victorian era’s ornate furniture style.
What makes the Denver clock particularly collectible is its striking 12-inch dial with Roman numerals and a finely carved gilt bronze bezel. The clock’s movement, driven by a heavy brass cylinder weight, ensures precision timekeeping, while the hooded pendulum adds an air of mystery to this already captivating piece.
Notable features include the presence of two time zones on the dial, denoted by separate minutes and hours hands for Eastern Standard Time (EST) and Mountain Standard Time (MST). This dual time feature reflects the clock’s namesake city’s role as a major hub during the westward expansion of the United States. The Denver clock is not only an essential addition to any antique clock collection but also a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the Seth Thomas Clock Company in the 19th century.
