About the Seth Thomas “marble mantel” Clock

This reference page focuses on the Antique Seth Thomas Marble Mantel Clock, a notable timepiece from American clockmaking history. Manufactured around 1888, this clock is one of several Belgian slate (black marble) mantel clocks produced by Seth Thomas, as detailed in Ly’s Vol. 2 of Seth Thomas Clocks & Movements on pages 581-588.

Measuring 13 inches tall and 20.5 inches wide, this clock features a two-part porcelain dial with the distinctive Seth Thomas (ST) logo. The dial is housed within a brass rococo sash and protected by beveled glass. The dial exhibits some chips but they are not overly noticeable.

The front of the clock boasts gold paint in intricate patterns, as well as two marbled accents. Despite some minor chips to the slate, particularly at the upper left corner, these imperfections are almost invisible due to the polished finish.

The visible escapement on this clock utilizes steel pallets, and it operates as an 8-day, time and half-hour strike mechanism. The striking function is executed on a cathedral gong, which bears the Seth Thomas signature.

Given the relatively uncommon nature of Seth Thomas marble mantel clocks, this particular piece merits careful examination for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
