About the Seth Thomas “No. 357” Clock

The Seth Thomas “No. 357” clock is a captivating timepiece that shares many similarities with another model from the renowned Seth Thomas Clock Co. The primary distinction lies in the half columns, which are adorned with Shell veneer instead of the typical variety found in the other model.

This 32-inch high clock boasts a rosewood veneered case, complete with a sleigh bottom and cornice top, as well as three original glasses. The dial is beautifully painted, while the movement is signed and runs for eight days. The clock features old hands, a coil gong, a brass pendulum bob, and a pair of iron weights that are unique to this model compared to other clocks of its type.

Inside the case, the weights will efficiently power the clock, although they differ from those commonly found in similar models. The choice between these two clocks may ultimately come down to personal preference regarding the columns and/or glasses. Both clocks bear the “Plymouth Hollow” label inside, further attesting to their authenticity as Seth Thomas creations, with the model number being Ly-Seth Thomas No. 1712.

Seth Thomas Clock Co. almost identical to No. 357 but the half columns are Shell.

Seth Thomas Clock Co. almost identical to No. 357 but the half columns are Shell.

Same sleigh bottom, cornice top, three original glasses, and the 32″ high rosewood veneered case. Gold capitals and bases on the shell columns. This clock like the previous has a complete “Plymouth Hollow” label inside, a very nice painted dial, old hands, coil gong, brass pendulum bob, pair of old iron weights, and a signed 8 day movement. The weights will run the clock and will look fine inside the case, but they are not the type weights we normally see in this type clock. I see very little difference in the two clocks other than the weights. Your choice, should you want only one, will probably be the one with the columns and/or glasses you prefer. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 1712.
