About the Seth Thomas “No. 4” Clock

Title: Seth Thomas No. 4 Clock Model – A Collector’s Essential

The Seth Thomas No. 4 clock, introduced in the late 19th century, is a quintessential mantel clock from one of America’s most revered clockmakers. This model, renowned for its elegance and precision, stands as an iconic representation of the Seth Thomas Clock Company’s craftsmanship during the Victorian era.

Typical case materials for the No. 4 include walnut, mahogany, oak, or rosewood, which were popular choices for their rich colors and fine grain patterns during the production period from approximately 1870 to 1925. The clock’s design is characterized by a rectangular shape with a flat top and a swan’s neck pediment. The dial, housed within a convex glass, features Roman numerals and is accompanied by a seconds hand, which distinguishes it from earlier Seth Thomas models.

The Seth Thomas No. 4 clock holds significant collectible value due to its combination of aesthetics, craftsmanship, and rarity. Its elegant design, coupled with the precision of the Swiss-style movement, has made it a sought-after piece among antique clock enthusiasts. Notable features include the swan’s neck pediment, an intricate carved ornament that is often adorned with floral motifs. Additionally, many No. 4 clocks feature finely crafted wooden weights and pendulums, adding to their overall appeal as collector’s items.

Investing in a well-preserved Seth Thomas No. 4 clock can offer both practical use and a significant addition to any antique collection. As with all antiques, condition is crucial when assessing value. A fully functional, well-maintained example of this icon
