  • Antique Seth Thomas “Globe” Model Clock

About the Seth Thomas “Globe” Clock

The Seth Thomas “Globe” clock, produced around 1898, 1909, and 1915, is a distinguished timepiece characterized by its octagon shape and long drop design. This model is available in mahogany and rosewood, with examples found in excellent original condition, retaining their original labels, dials, pendulums, and distinctive door moldings adorned with gold leaf accents.

The “Globe” clock stands at a height of 32 inches (81 cm). Notable variations include the 1909 model, which features a refinished rosewood veneered case, and the 1915 New Model, an 15-day timepiece. While some examples may exhibit minor wear or refinishing, their original details remain largely intact, including the painted dials, original hands, and gilt moldings on the lower door.

A unique feature of this model is its misidentification in Tran Ly’s Seth Thomas books, where the “Globe” New Model was mistaken for the “World.” Despite this confusion, both clocks are highly valued and represent fine examples of the Seth Thomas Clock Co.’s craftsmanship.

C.1915, Seth Thomas GLOBE, New Model, 15 Day, time, in very good original condition.

This is a very nice school clock, and mis-pictured in Tran Ly’s 1996 book on Seth Thomas. Please refer to page 150 which shows on the right a photo identified as a World. It is rather a Globe, New Model. The World is 17 inches wide and the Globe is 16 inches wide and the door is only 12.2 inches long instead of 13 inches on the New Globe; yet both are the same overall length. These are subtle differences, but I have had a proper World hanging in my kitchen since 1984. The lot selling here is a great clock with “old oak” veneer in fine shape, original dial with only small flakes near 3+11, and a fabulous label. Height 32 inches

  • Antique Seth Thomas “Kent” Model Clock

About the Seth Thomas “Kent” Clock

The Seth Thomas “Kent” clock, a notable piece from the City Series line, was produced around 1904 and is distinguished by its 14.5-inch height in dark old oak with a unique glossy finish over an alligatored one. This antique American clock, often compared to English bracket clocks due to its design, features a signed paper dial that has yellowed over time, while the center disk and bezel remain ornately cast and bright. The glass is flat and beveled, and the clock houses a signed, 8-day, time-and-strike movement that counts hours on a cathedral gong and marks half-hours on a nickel cup bell.

The Kent clock, while not extremely common, is considered relatively rare among Seth Thomas’ City Series clocks. Its originality is evident in its finish and features, with each run potentially displaying slight variations due to the materials available during production. The clock’s movement runs strongly, and it strikes a standing gong, identified by its Ly-Seth Thomas number 197. Despite its rarity, not many Kent clocks have been observed in recent sales, making it an intriguing addition to any antique American clocks collection. Engage with fellow enthusiasts and share your thoughts on this unique piece by posting comments and questions on the Antique American Clocks Facebook page.

    Antique Seth Thomas Kent Clock

    Antique Seth Thomas Kent Clock

Jul 2021 – #152 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Kent”, ca. 1904. The Kent is a “City Series” clock, a line of clocks that was very popular with the former owner of this auction. He would often tell me that he had all but one or two very rare ones (e.g., the Louisville, which he says he named), and after he started selling off his collection he then came into possession of the rare The Kent is 14.5 inches tall in “dark old oak” with a glossy finish over the older, slightly alligatored finish. The signed paper dial is quite yellowed, but the center disk and bezel are ornately cast and bright; the glass is flat and beveled. The signed, 8-day, time-and-strike movement is bright and shiny, running strongly, and counting the hours on a cathedral gong and marking the half-hours on a nickel cup bell. I believe the Kent was made to resemble an English bracket clock and named accordingly. No recent sales of this relatively rare clock. Post comments and questions on the AAC facebook page!

Seth Thomas City Series mantle clock, “Kent”, C. 1909.

The clock was only made in dark oak, stands 14.25″ high. As happened so many times with this type clock they didn’t make them exactly alike. Each run may be different depending on materials available. This clock is original but has some features, particularly the applied pieces that are different from catalog pictures. There are not many of the Kent’s around. We haven’t seen many and for sure not enough for each collector of City Series clocks to have one. The finish and everything else about the clock is original. It has not been messed with. The paper dial, brass inner dial, brass sash, all very good. Very clean and bright, signed 8 day movement. Runs nice and strikes a standing gong. Ly-Seth Thomas #197.

One of a set of 6. The catalogs say they were made in old oak only. Sorry, this one is a lovely walnut, 23 inches high, with the original glass and pendulum. As with all the clocks in this nice collection, the owner liked new, white, paper dials. A label inside and another on the back. 8 day striking half hours on a gong and alarms on a brass bell, running strong. Very nice clock. Ly-Seth Thomas No.1103.

Seth Thomas and Sons statue clock, No. 8022.

Seth Thomas and Sons statue clock, No. 8022.

I have been preaching for several years that the Seth Thomas and Sons statue clocks would be goingup in price, just as soon as prices for the poplar Ansonia statue prices gotout of reach of the average collector. That started happening a year or twoago. Now I am only speaking to a dozen or so of the Seth Thomas statues, theones that have that “size and look”. This is definitely our favorite andevidently the favorite of many decorators, as they snatch them away from usas quick as we can get them restored. This clock has been professionally restoredin a Syrian Bronze color. Everything is in place except the back door whichis missing. The 8 day movement is running but will need to be put in beat. Signed round French type movement, bell strike, outside count wheel. Theporcelain dial has been touched up where all Seth Thomas porcelain dialschip, around the arbors. The dial looks fine now. I notice that Tran Du LyÕs, American Clocks, Volume 2, gave a value for this clock of $900 in the year2000. I would fully expect it would bring considerably more today.
