Seth Thomas “Buffalo”, ca 1886.

One of the companyÕs large series of clocks named for cities. The early models, made in the l870Õs and 1880Õs, were generally made of walnut or rosewood and had very distinctive case designs. When “kitchen clocks” became poplar in the 1890Õs and later, Seth Thomas fell in lock step with other clock makers and lowered their standards on the city series line. Primarily made of oak and using cheaper pendulum bobs, bezels, etc. they made the clocks for the masses who could afford a $10 to $20 mantle clock. This walnut case has been cleaned, dial repainted, but it is all original with the fancy swirled Seth Thomas nickel pendulum, nickel gong base, and dial ring. Spindles on railing are brass and all intact. Most of a black label inside, hands are replacements. Movement is 8 day, hourstrike on the Cathedral Bell, has an alarm in place. Original silvered dial is tarnished with scratches and wear around the winding arbors. Hands and finials are original. This clock still has the sturdy separate chime movement no. 119, winding at 3 o’clock, and with a long shaft to carry the torque back to the rear movement. Moreover this particular clock has a premium dial with raised bronze numerals (some discoloration). Case retains original finish; runs and chimes nicely. Height 14″ Reserve $250

Like the above clock this was purchased at a retail shop in Connecticut. The price was $985 in 1994. The shop had refinished the case and inserted a tablet from a small Waltham banjo (does look good!!). Although the dial surface is original, with touch up, the numerals and chapter have been re-blacked. The label on this clock is exceptional; has original movement and hands and is in running order. Note this is the first version with straight turned side columns (later were tapered and the clock was an inch taller). Height 16 inches

This was one of the city series offered by Seth Thomas. The only veneer damage is on the base where some small pieces are missing. The ebonized areas of the case will need some touchup to hide scraps and dings. The original painted dial is very nice with some minor loss around the mounting screws and one small chip on the side. The tablet and hands are original. Both finials have lost their tips and been filed smooth. The label inside is very clean. Height 14 inches

The case appears pretty clean with only a little tarnish along the edges of the top. The porcelain dial has a hairline crack near the number four and the glass in the rear door has been replaced with a flat sheet of glass. The simulated mercury pendulum has new vials which are a bit too long, but look OK. Overall good condition and running. Height 11 inches

It was a rich gold finished case originally, now dirty and tarnished, should cleanup with a little work. 8 day movement strikes half hours on a cathedral gong, and it is a runner. 9-1/2 inch case was originally finished in rich gold, now dull, needs to be polished. Clean and bright machined sash. Porcelain dial has one small hairline, large, distinct, black numbers inside the dial ring and 60 minute marks around the outside of the dial ring. 8 day movement strikes a cathedral gong on the halfhours, and it is running strong. Four good beveled glasses, one miniscule corner chip. If you want a nice, inexpensive crystal regulator, this is the one. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 350.

This little fellow is only 9.5″ high, has a brush brass finish. Long time in a storage warehouse means you will have to clean and polish, but I will say one thing, the man could make his clocks run. I would put some oil on it even though it is running. A very fine looking silver dial, etched numerals, original hands, key, and 2 vial imitation mercury pendulum. Just one corner chipped on the 4 beveled glasses. Ly-Seth Thomas #331.
