About the Seth Thomas “Large Rosewood Column” Clock

Title: Seth Thomas “Large Rosewood Column” Clock Model: A Collector’s Guide

The Seth Thomas “Large Rosewood Column” clock is a classic mantel clock, renowned for its grandeur and fine craftsmanship. This model, produced primarily between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was part of the company’s extensive line of mantel clocks, which were designed to gracefully complement Victorian-era interiors.

The clock’s case is made of rosewood, a popular choice for its rich color and distinctive grain pattern during that period. The column design, featuring intricate fluting along the vertical support, adds an elegant touch to the overall aesthetic. The dial, usually brass or porcelain, often features Roman numerals and decorative motifs.

For collectors, this model holds significant value due to its rarity, high-quality materials, and association with the esteemed Seth Thomas Clock Company. Its large size, compared to other mantel clocks of the era, makes it a notable feature in any collection. Notable features include a weight-driven movement, pendulum swing visible through the clock’s open face, and a striking mechanism that produces a resonant chiming sound.

In addition to its historical significance and aesthetic appeal, this model is also admired for its longevity and durability, making it an excellent investment for discerning antique clock collectors. As with any antique, the condition of the piece greatly affects its value, so careful inspection and appraisal by a professional are always recommended before purchase.

Looking face on, the rosewood veneer case is beautiful; the graining in the wood is astounding. Looking closer at the 32″ case we find a few ticks on the corners, nothing really major and shouldnÕt require an expert to do the needed repairs. The gold on the capitals and bases is rather dull and there is one chip in the left base. Both glasses are original and showing 10 percent or less paint loss. IfI were going to keep the clock I would back both glasses with blue paint. The old dial is also original and also has about 10 percent paint loss. DoesnÕt lookthat bad to me, but your call on a dial repaint. Good signed brass movement strikes a coil gong, running very well, but I would check the cords before extensive use. For some reason the left 1/3 of the label has evaporated. Enough is there to know all about the clock. For instance it is a Plymouth Hollow label, which is why I put the year made as1863, because the town name was changed to Thomaston in 1865. The old weights are not a match, but pendulum and key are old. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 986.
