About the Seth Thomas “Large Rosewood and Gilt Column” Clock

The Seth Thomas “Large Rosewood and Gilt Column” clock, produced around 1875 by the renowned Seth Thomas Clock Company, is an impressive example of Victorian-era timepiece craftsmanship. This 8-day, weight-driven clock features both strike and alarm functions, with a coil gong for the striking mechanism and a brass bell for the alarm. The clock is currently in working condition.

The clock’s most striking feature is its ornate gilt columns, which remain original and are in excellent condition. The dial, while not perfect, could be restored through repair and repainting if desired. The clock retains its original glasses, with the top glass having been rebacked, and the bottom glass showing signs of wear.

The rosewood case exhibits some minor veneer repairs on the door and lower flat pieces, but overall, it presents a fine example of early clockmaking. Notably, a partial image of a girl was partially scraped to reveal the pendulum swing, adding an intriguing touch to this historic piece. The clock bears the Seth Thomas No. 983 number, further attesting to its authenticity and historical significance. This clock offers a unique blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal, making it a valuable addition to any collection.

This is an 8 day, weight clock, strike and alarm, and is running. Strikes on a coil gong, alarms on a brass bell. A very good full label, replaced zincdial with some damage where other screw holes were made, and also damage aroundthe arbors. Dial isnÕt all that bad and could be repaired and repainted ifyou choose. The real eye catcher are the gilt columns, original and very nice. Both glasses are original, top has been rebacked, bottom has been abused. The picture of a pretty girl was partially scraped so we could see the pendulum swing. How remarkable. Rosewood case has some small veneer repairs mainlyon the door and bottom flat pieces. All in all, a very nice early clock.Ly-Seth Thomas No. 983.
