About the Seth Thomas “Large Rosewood Shell Column” Clock

The Seth Thomas “Large Rosewood Shell Column” clock, dating back to approximately 1863, showcases a distinctive and elegant design. The clock stands tall at 32 inches, with a rosewood veneer column case that features intricately crafted shell columns, capitals, and bases adorned with more than 90 percent of the original gold.

The rosewood veneer is well-preserved on the doors, the rolling pieces on the base, and the rolling top, save for a few minor blemishes near the top edge that require some patching. Although there has been some patchwork in a couple of flat areas, the wrong veneer was unfortunately used in these instances. The bottom baseboard will also necessitate a few additional flat veneer pieces to ensure its continued integrity.

The clock’s original dial pan has undergone professional restoration and matches the condition of the fabulous old glasses almost perfectly. The label, a testament to the clock’s authenticity, is in exceptional condition, with only minor paper loss in one weight chute and some light staining on the bottom. The clean, signed brass movement is strung with cat gut, and the clock is currently running smoothly. This antique timepiece comes complete with a pair of old and correct weights, pendulum bob, and key, bearing the Ly-Seth Thomas No. 987 marking.
