Antique Seth Thomas Octagon top cottage Clock

Jan 2021 – 242 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas Clock Co. “Octagon Top”, 1855-1860. These 9-inch clocks were made with a variety of 30-hour movements that could include strike and alarm. Owen Burt wrote the definitive catalog of this model, published in the NAWCC in three issues in 1998; one might reasonably assume that he covered all possibilities, documenting everything from the movements to the labels and hands. He missed this one. The movement in this cottage is not shown in Ly’s books on Seth Thomas clocks nor in Burt’s treatise on these clocks; the anchor is located below the escape wheel, rather than to the right side, as found in every other example. The movement is signed with the Plymouth stamp, and there is a Plymouth Hollow label used from 1855 to 1860. The case is veneered in rosewood with a very dark, glossy finish; both glasses are original, including the well-preserved tablet. The metal dial has been repainted, the ST hands are period. It is running without hesitation. A nice little find.

Antique Seth Thomas Octagon long drop Clock

Jul 2020 – 214 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas long-drop octagon clock, 1888. The 31-inch oak case would appear to be the same as used for the early Globe models, but it holds an 8-day, time-only movement (ST No. 41) with a front-mounted pendulum. that the pendulum bob is suspended on a wire rather than on a rear-mounted pendulum stick. I would assume that this is a less expensive option than the Globe, but it is not shown in Ly’s books on Seth Thomas clocks; I cannot find an example in the Antique Clocks Price Guide either. There is no evidence that the movement is not original to the case ( additional screw holes). The dial pan is new, as are the hands; the old glass in the bezel was replaced some time ago, the lower glass is newer as well. The pendulum bob is not Seth Thomas issue. There is a black Seth Thomas label inside (not visible in the photo as it is behind the framing), and the back is stamped with the date of manufacture (Oct 1888). The clock is running and keeping time.
