Jan 2020 – 21 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas mirrorside, ca. 1880? Here’s another mirrorside that I’ve never seen before and cannot be found in Ly’s books on Seth Thomas clocks or in the Antique Clocks Price Guide. Carroll Horton says he also has never seen one. It stands 26 inches high with an unusual crest including a large nickeled ornament with the underlying brass showing through on the high spots. There is a similar nickeled ornament on the base of the walnut case. side mirrors are old with gold chalk putti on either side. One has lost the tip of its wing. The door glass is old, backed in black with an opening to see the Eclipse pendulum bob, normally only seen with the Eclipse (ball-top) model. The very old paper dial is signed faintly with the ST logo. The ST lyre movement is running and striking; there used to be an alarm but it has been removed and only the set ring remains. I see no indication that this is not the original movement to this case; the door opens with a push-button on the side typical of Seth Thomas clocks, and there is a brass tab at the bottom to center the pendulum, also typical of ST clocks from the late 1800’s. There is a signed ST gong. There was a label on the bottom of the backwall but it has been lost, so we cannot be sure that the case is ST issue, and in the absence of any other evidence of a Seth Thomas mirrorside, I cannot exclude the possibility that this is a careful fabrication. If legitimate, this model, along with the Welch mirrorside (#13) must be the two most difficult mirrorsides to find.
