Antique Seth Thomas Fashion No. 8 Clock

Jul 2020 – 28 Antique American Clocks Southern Calendar Clock Co. “Fashion No. 8”, ca. 1887. This is a very late model and a very scarce model. The key difference with the No. 8 is the two rosettes inset into the inner door. Otherwise it uses the standard walnut case (with a full hood). The 32-inch case is in excellent condition, with three original finials. The door glass is old and has the proper lettering. The painted metal dials are old, possibly original, with correct hands; there is some inpainting to the time dial and some of the numbering has been strengthened on the calendar dial. The seconds bit dial is yellowed paper, and the calendar rollers are very yellowed and dark. The 8-day time-and-strike movement is signed Seth Thomas and “Made solely for the Southern Calendar Clock Co.” This the standard long-drop pendulum movement they were making in the later years for SCCC. This example strikes on a large nickel bell. It is running, a bit delicately, and striking; the calendar is advancing. Because the presumably original dials are not labeled with the manufacturer/marketer it is not clear which company – ST or SCCC – was selling this model. There are some differences in the parts used in various examples of this model, suggesting that it was at the end of a production period. Another very difficult model to find in good condition, and one that is easy to fake by modifying a No. 5 door. This example came from a highly regarded collector of Fashion clocks. Described on page 290 of Ly’s book Calendar Clocks $2500-$4000. There is some discussion of the dial on this clock; it appears that Fashion No. 8’s with both a flat dial (as found in the Fashion 4V) and with a sunken second bits dial (as found here) have been It may well be that both types of dials were used, as this model was made at the end of the Seth Thomas Fashion production run and they may have been using up stock. Antique Seth Thomas Fashion No. 8 Clock

Jul 2021 – #29 Antique American Clocks Southern Calendar Clock Co. “Fashion No. 8”, ca. 1887. One of the last Fashion models, produced by Seth Thomas after they bought out SCCC. The case is fabulous here with a fine furniture finish – best finish on any clock is this group. The finials are modern replacements. The door glass is wavy, the Fashion lettering correct (6.5 inches long, 3.25 inches tall). Both dials were painted by The Dial House on replacement dial pans; there are old Seth Thomas Fashion hands. The 8-day time-and-strike movement is running and striking on the cathedral gong, the calendar is advancing. No label, not uncommon. The details that distinguish the No. 8 from earlier models, and in particular the No. 5, are the paired rosettes on the calendar door, and the shift of the inner door handle away from the outer door frame, eliminating the need to cut out part of that door frame to accommodate the handle. Given the proclivity for Seth Thomas Fashion dial pans to corrode, the replacement dial pans used here are reasonable restorations that preserve the appearance and function of this rare clock. is the nicest example of this model I have seen. Jul 2020 – 27 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Fashion No. 7”, 1889. Current thinking is that this model was made almost exclusively for the C.J. Pettigrew Clock Co. in Fort Worth, Texas by Seth Thomas in a limited run; these clocks are very uncommon. The 32-inch walnut case is in excellent condition with replacement finials and an original door glass and Fashion lettering Both dials have been repainted, with the sunken seconds dial being paper. The calendar dial is labeled for the Pettigrew Clock Co. as typically found; all hands are correct. Most notable about this model is the flat top with an arched front – the only Fashion clock so made. There also are cutouts on the inside of the glass door to accommodate the inner door hinges and the inner doorknob; adjustments were made in later models such that these cutouts were no longer needed. The 8-day time-and-strike movement is signed Seth Thomas and is running and striking on a cathedral gong, and the calendar is advancing. It uses a long-drop pendulum with a damascened nickel bob and has an “outside fly”. There is no label; the back of the case is dated October 1889. This is one of the most difficult Fashion clocks to find. $2500-$4000. Tim Ritchhart (my Fashion expert) believes that the door glass has been replaced and the lettering is not correct for this model. Antique Seth Thomas Fashion No. 6 Clock

Jan 2020 – 210 Antique American Clocks Southern Calendar Clock Co. “Fashion No. 6”, ca. 1880. The No. 6, with black dials and a long-drop pendulum can be considered a variant of the No. 4 and is one of the more difficult models to find. Other distinguishing features are nickel-plated hands and a white interior door label. This example lacks the nickel hands (these are black Fashion hands painted silver) and the repainted Fashion label on the door glass is in an earlier style than the lettering used on this model. The glass is old but probably not original, the finish on the walnut case is just right, and it is running just fine, striking on the hours, and the calendar is advancing. The 8-day movement is signed Seth Thomas and has the expected long-drop pendulum with a damascened silver bob. It stands 32 inches tall to the top of the center finial.
