    Jul 2021 – #34 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Hecla”, ca. 1888. A classic and highly desirable Seth Thomas shelf clock that strikes the quarter-hours on two nested nickel bells and counts the hours on a cathedral gong. The 22.5-inch walnut case has an old and possibly original finish with a great patina. The door glass is old/original; the dial old paint with the ST logo and just a bit of chipping, the hands correct. The movement is signed, has three winding ports (strike, chime, and time), and is running and striking as expected, regulated by a damascened nickel pendulum. There is a darkened label on the inside bottom, no date on the back. This is about as nice an example as you will find. Horton’s sold a similar example in July 2019 for $1075. $900-$1200. The 22.5-inch case is oak with a clean, old finish; I see no damage. glass is likely original, the dial is paper with proper hands. The 8-day, time, strike, and chime movement is signed and running, but the strike and chime trains are very sticky and will need attention. The pendulum bob is damascened nickel. is a dark label inside on the bottom. AAC sold one last summer for $1350 and Cottone’s sold one last year for $1300. $800-$1200.

    There were several of the College Series clocks in this collection, and this one is perhaps the nicest. The 23″ high oak case is clean and complete, has no repairs or breaks on the pointed edges. There are 2-3 small veneer chips but overall very nice. Original glass, pendulum, dial, hands, dial rings, door latch, and gong. The 8 day movement is running and striking half hours and hours on the Cathedral gong. Most of a label is still on the back. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 2262.

    As far as I know there were six models in this series; this one being made of oak, with an 8 day, half hour strike movement, striking on a wire bell, and has a 6″ paper dial. This model has an alarm that sounds on a bell. The pendulums are all the same, dials are signed, hands are the same, and should have a label on the back. This clock has no label, has been cleaned and no finish or polish put back on, appears very dry. It has a good original glass, and everything else is original so you have that going for you when you begin restoration. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 2262.
