About the Seth Thomas “Putnam” Clock

The Seth Thomas “Putnam” clock is an exquisite example of American craftsmanship, showcasing the timeless design aesthetic of early 19th-century clocks. This antique piece, although a reissue, faithfully recreates the charm and elegance of its predecessors.

The 36.25-inch case is gracefully veneered in mahogany, featuring intricately carved half-columns and splat that add to its visual appeal. The original glasses, including the distinctive tablet, adorn this clock, adding a touch of authenticity to its design.

The dial, painted in the style of the 1890s, bears the Seth Thomas name at the bottom, while the hands resemble those depicted in the catalog illustration (Ly, Clocks & Movements, Vol. 1, page 515). The clock’s movement is an ST 8-day, time-and-strike brass lyre, operating on a standing cathedral gong, driven by two 8-day iron weights.

Interestingly, there was a similar model, the Yorktown, which was spring-driven. A good paper label can be found within this clock, and while some interior details may have been replaced or refurbished, the overall integrity of the piece remains intact.

Though sales data for this specific model is limited, this Seth Thomas “Putnam” 8 Day Mantel Clock with its hand-carved columns and dark mahogany finish is sure to captivate any collector seeking a piece that embodies the essence of traditional American clockmaking.

Antique Seth Thomas pillar & scroll - off-center Clock

Antique Seth Thomas pillar & scroll – off-center Clock

Jan 2021 – 195 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas off-center pillar & scroll, ca. 1825. An early edition of the pillar & scroll invented by Eli Terry, here made by his former employee Seth Thomas. It stands 29 inches tall with a cleaned and polished mahogany case and veneer. Note the satinwood veneer on the scroll-top; the brass urns are the proper type and mount with steel Remarkably, I see no repairs to the scrolls; however, I believe the feet have been replaced, and both glasses are modern with an unsigned tablet. There is a door lock and ivory escutcheon. The wooden dial is the proper ST type with a decoration below the mainstem; the dial shows wear and fading. The pewter hands are hand-made. The 4-wheel wood-strap movement is correct and is running without issue, striking on an iron bell. There are two proper lead weights compounded on four wooden pulleys (not all original) and a decent label on the backboard. These clocks are not too uncommon and this is one of the nicer ones I have seen, even with the replaced glasses. This model generally sells for $1200-$2000 when in good condition.

Antique Seth Thomas pillar & scroll - inside/outside Clock

Antique Seth Thomas pillar & scroll – inside/outside Clock

Jul 2020 – 16 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas reeded pillar & scroll, ca. 1816. Perhaps the first pillar & scroll model made and considered to be a transitional model to the more common off-center pillar & scroll. Indeed, I know of only five examples, this being one of them; it is described along with the second example in an article in the NAWCC 1962 by W.F. Pritchett. If you are a member you can read the article ; if you are the winning bidder I will include a photocopy of the article. The third example I am aware of is described by Ly in American Clocks Vol. 3 , page 143, and the fourth and fifth were sold by Horton’s in 2002 and 2003. This model is sometimes called an “inside-outside” P&S, as the escape wheel is visible behind the dial but the pendulum swings behind the dial rather than in front of it, as is found with Eli Terry’s “outside escapement” The second thing that makes this clock unusual is the full-length glass, with the tablet demarcated by a gold leaf border rather than a wooden cross-piece. Note the painted spandrels around the dial and the plain wooden dial, save the war eagle bottom center. The hands are brass. Other differences from later P&S clocks include the reeding on the front sides and behind the straight columns, the short feet, and the wooden urn finials. The wooden strap, 30-hour movement is driven by two small lead weights compounded on pulleys and is running and striking readily. There is an excellent label inside. The clock is 27.5 inches tall and appears to be the most original example of this model. $5000-$7500.

  • Antique Seth Thomas “pillar & scroll” Model Clock

About the Seth Thomas “pillar & scroll” Clock

The Seth Thomas “pillar & scroll” clock, a quintessential piece of American horology, presents an intriguing blend of originality and restoration. Dating back to approximately 1830, this antique timepiece stands at 31 inches tall.

The wooden case, though displaying signs of age with a missing veneer on the lower left door and a weakened left front foot, retains its original glasses and tablet, which has been repainted by Mr. Moberg. The scrolls have been mended, but the originality is preserved as the tips remain unrepaired.

The brass urn finials are in Seth Thomas style, complete with metal posts, while the feet and skirt showcase authentic craftsmanship. The dial, though featuring replacement hands, remains clean and unmarred.

This clock houses a functioning 30-hour wooden movement that runs and strikes without issue, driven by two old weights and regulated by a lead-backed pendulum bob. A good label can be found within the clock, adding to its authenticity.

Though not without its imperfections, this Seth Thomas “pillar & scroll” clock offers an attractive example of early American clockmaking, making it a captivating addition to any collection.

Both back feet are replacements. Both glasses are original, the tablet repainted. There is a knob added to the door and the brass urn finials are very incorrect. I believe the dial board is taken from an Eli Terry clock, based on the style and decoration. The hands are the correct style, but the minute hand is short.
