About the Seth Thomas “Chronometer Lever No. 5004” Clock

The Seth Thomas “Chronometer Lever No. 5004,” manufactured by Seth Thomas Sons & Co., New York around 1875, is a distinctive locomotive timepiece that showcases the craftsmanship of its era. The clock features a heavy cast brass case, originally nickel-plated but now displaying the brass base due to wear.

The dial, signed by Seth Thomas and measuring 4.5 inches in diameter, is porcelain and houses a movement of exceptional quality. The movement boasts steel pinions, a chronometer balance, jeweled components, and finely tempered hair springs, all of which are hallmarks of the brand’s commitment to precision and durability.

While the dial has suffered some damage over time—with chips around the fast/slow setting hole and the seconds bit, as well as paint applied over these areas—the clock remains functional. Additionally, a crack in the door glass has propagated approximately 1.5 inches into the panel. Despite these imperfections, this Seth Thomas “Chronometer Lever No. 5004” is an intriguing piece of history that would undoubtedly be a valuable addition to any collector’s collection in excellent condition.
