About the Seth Thomas “Gallery” Clock

The Seth Thomas Gallery clock, a timepiece of grand proportions and historical significance, is a noteworthy addition to any collector’s inventory. Originating from the renowned Seth Thomas Clock Company, this large gallery clock boasts an impressive 24-inch painted dial in very nice condition, as seen in the 1917 trade catalog of the company. The movement, designated No.86T, is a 30-day double spring design with large brass plates, a Graham deadbeat escapement, and a wooden pendulum stick, all housed within a heavy iron back plate. The oak case, measuring 30 inches square, features both hinged front and back doors for easy access to either side.

Another variant of the Seth Thomas Gallery clock is a smaller model with an 8-day time-only movement and a beautifully refinished deeply turned solid oak case, approximately 16.5 inches in height. The dial on this version is near perfect, though the pendulum may not be original to the piece.

These Seth Thomas Gallery clocks, produced around the turn of the 20th century, are characterized by their imposing size and intricate craftsmanship. They are a testament to the skill and attention to detail that defined the Seth Thomas Clock Company during this era. Whether in restored or original condition, these impressive timepieces continue to captivate collectors with their historical significance and timeless beauty.
