About the Seth Thomas “No. 8030” Clock

Introducing the Seth Thomas “No. 8030,” a striking mantel clock manufactured by Seth Thomas & Sons around 1874. This timepiece boasts a cast brass construction standing at approximately 15 inches high, adorned with an ornate classical case that retains its original French bronze finish, albeit with minor wear and a poor replacement rear door in some instances.

The Seth Thomas “No. 8030” is equipped with a round, bell-strike movement featuring an outside count wheel, signed by the manufacturer. The clock’s dial may show minor chips around the winding holes, and some clocks have been repainted in a dull bronze color. Notably, the dial is signed by various retailers such as Mitchell Vance & Co., adding to its historical significance.

The clock’s pendulum is correct and the timepiece runs strongly. The thick beveled glass remains in good condition across most examples. However, some clocks may feature mismatched replacement hands or spade hands that are slightly too large. Despite these minor imperfections, the Seth Thomas “No. 8030” remains a valuable addition to any clock collection due to its historical significance and distinctive design.

It has a French type movement, round, bell strike, outside count wheel, and signed by Seth Thomas. The porcelain dial is not the quality of the French dials as they were easily chipped around the winding arbors, although the chipping is very minor. Seth did use very heavy beveled glasses and fancy dial rings and bezels. The pendulum is correct and the clock is running strong. Clock’s complete and original. Ly-American No.866.
