Antique Seth Thomas Office Calendar No. 1 Clock
Jan 2020 – 28 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 1”, ca. 1875. Horton’s sold several of these in recent years, none better looking than this one. The rosewood veneer is quite nice here, no missing pieces, no repairs evident. The painted dials are old, the time dial possibly original, the calendar dial repainted a while ago. The upper glass is old, the calendar glass modern. The hands are old but may not be original, the mount for the minute hand has been repaired. The 8-day weight-driven movement is unsigned and running, but not with commitment, and stops frequently. The pendulum rod is correct, the bob a replacement, I think. The weight that runs down the right side is correct. The calendar movement is functioning, the day and date are advancing. It is 40 inches long. $1200-$1500.

Antique Seth Thomas Office Calendar No. 1 Clock
Jan 2021 – 187 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 1”, ca. 1885. A 39-inch case with its original rosewood veneer, still in good shape minus a few chips. This is the later, single-OG model; see #189 for the earlier double-OG model. glasses are old including the center advertising glass, with the name of perhaps a jeweler in Mt. Vernon OH. This glass was backed at one time with a label glued onto the back of the door. The calendar dial is original, with many chips touched up, but it is still in remarkably good condition. The time dial has been repainted. The rectangular 8-day, time-only movement is not signed but is shown in Ly’s book Calendar Clocks on page 246, with minor differences. The pendulum rod is typical for this model, and the bob is ST issue with faint damascening; the weight is correct. The R.T. Andrews calendar movement has been painted gold; the rollers hold what must be the original papers. There is a “do not oil” label behind the calendar but the Seth Thomas label normally found in the middle of the door is gone with the window backing. The clock is running without problem; the calendar date is advancing but the weekday roller mechanism needs attention. This is a very original example. model has been selling for $1200-$1800 recently.

Antique Seth Thomas Office Calendar No. 1 Clock
Jan 2021 – 189 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 1”, ca. 1864. This is the earlier model of the Office Calendar No. 1 with the double-OG door (compare to #187). Note that the black label on the back of the door states a Plymouth Hollow address, the name used before 1865. The movement is the early ST calendar movement, weight-driven, with the correct pendulum rod (see Ly, Calendar Clocks , page 245). The calendar movement is the early Mix Brothers movement that was used until about 1876, when the Andrews calendar movement was adopted. The movement is mounted slightly too far forward in the case and as a result the pendulum rod makes a close fit with the calendar dial, rubbing against it unless the clock is hung “just so”. movement runs without problem and the calendar is advancing. The rosewood veneer on the case is almost certainly a professional replacement, as the original veneer on these double-OG’s rarely lasts this long; it looks great. The glasses are old and the dials have been repainted, with a bit of artistic license on the calendar dial. With a slight adjustment to the positioning of the movement this will be an outstanding working example of this classic early Seth Thomas calendar clock. $1200-$1800.

C.1865, Seth Thomas Clock Co., Plymouth Hollow, Office Calendar
No. 1, in generally good condition. This rosewood veneered example has some veneer damage on the top molding and various chips along the outer edge of the case, as well as the upper bezel; from the front it still looks quite good. The lower dial has a patch to cover a small area of paint loss; the word “Regulator” is barely visible on original top dial, and the text on the lower dial has faded with age. The glue has failed on the left calendar roller and one of the segments will need gluing in. The hands look Ok but are not proper for this clock; should be large moon style; weight and pendulum are replacements. Door lock intact. Overall good+ condition; these are hard to find with perfect veneer. Height 40 inches

It would be hard to choose between this and the previous lot. Height 40 inches

C.1868, Seth Thomas, Office Calendar No. 1 Wall Clock
in walnut, in generally good restored condition. This clock was completely re-veneered around 30 years ago, and anyone who has ever tried veneering a complicated Seth Thomas molding, knows it is problematic. There are a couple of bubbles and creases in the round bezel veneer, but generally it is an “OK” job. The inside of the door retains original operating instructions (with Plymouth Hollow address), and the calendar mechanism and rollers are original. Both dials have been professionally repainted with proper numerals and patent information. The weight is an interesting model with a detachable iron pulley on top; looks OK. Runs and the perpetual calendar changes. These have been selling for around $2800 with original veneer, so our estimate considers the current condition. Height 40 inches $1500-1800

C.1880, Seth Thomas Office Calendar No. 1 wall clock
(dated label inside), in excellent original condition. This case retains outstanding burled walnut veneer, with minor nicks and scrapes that are only visible on the closest inspection. The case has been hand polished to a high luster and really is about “as good as it gets”. The original dials have some wear from setting and minor flaking, but are generally excellent. The inside instruction label states that the calendar is set for 1880, and this is a reliable indicator of the production date. The label has some splits but is fully legible. This figure 8 model has increased greatly in popularity over the past decade. Height 40 inches

The rosewood veneer case is in good condition, with a number of chips that have been filled in with stain, and other loose bits. Seth Thomas Clock Co. “Office Calendar No. 1”, ca 1872.
I have one almost identical to this one and came within an ace of having two. This clock is very nice excepting for a replaced weight and pendulum. The rosewood veneered case is very nice, and stands 40″ high, and has a plain rosewood panel in the center. As with any large heavy clock you could probably find some edge chips if you looked hard enough. Excellent painted zinc dials are original, lettering is only slightly faded. Good hands, calendar rollers, and a near perfect black and gold label on the back of the door. Key lock on the side and a wood latch to hold the door. The movements are original and in good working order. Ly-Seth Thomas, pages 89-90; Ly-Calendar, pages 244-247.

The original painted time dial (12″) has some flaking and minor loss at the screw holes. The time hands are original. The original painted calendar dial (14″) may have had some strengthening to the numbers. The calendar hand is original. Both dial glasses are old and appear to be original. Both the weight and pendulum bob are original to the clock. Overall, this is a very nice example of the No. 1 Office Calendar. Ht 40.5″.

C.1865, Seth Thomas Clock Co., Plymouth Hollow, Office Calendar No. 1, 8-day rosewood figure 8 case, weight driven double dial perpetual calendar.
Condition: the case front has been refinished; case sides still with dark shellac in place; minor chips in veneer are colored in with shellac, do not show. This is the earlier configuration case with in and out OOG side molding with trim strip along the edge, unlike the later version which is all single OG veneer. C.1870, Seth Thomas, “Office Calendar No.1” in excellent restored condition.
This clock is almost as nice as the No. 1 we sold in 2001 from the Rappaport collection. The dials have been professionally refinished and the rollers recovered. This has long been one of the most popular Seth Thomas double dials, with 12 sided top & bottom at varying angles, and with 12″ time dial and 14″ calendar dial. The rosewood veneer is excellent and has been refinished and polished to a medium sheen. The only minor negative is a home-made calendar hand, which looks OK, but not right dimensions. A very attractive and impressive clock. Height 40 inches
