About the Seth Thomas “Rio” Clock

Title: Seth Thomas “Rio” Clock Model: A Collector’s Guide

The Seth Thomas “Rio” clock, introduced in the late 19th century, is a striking example of the company’s craftsmanship and artistic innovation. This mantel clock falls under the decorative category, offering an attractive addition to any room’s decor.

Typical case materials for the Rio model include mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, with intricate inlays adding a touch of elegance. The design is characterized by its round dial with a distinctive open-worked, floral motif around the outer edge, surrounded by a bezel adorned with brass filigree. The Roman numerals on the dial are another notable feature that adds to its antique charm.

Produced between 1875 and 1900, the Rio clock is collectible due to its unique design, high-quality materials, and limited production run. This model was part of Seth Thomas’s effort to create clocks that were both practical and aesthetically pleasing, making it a popular choice among antique collectors today.

Notable features include the precision movement, which ensures accurate timekeeping, and the finely crafted pendulum bob, often featuring elaborate designs such as flowers or scrollwork. The Rio clock also boasts a chiming mechanism, adding to its charm and functionality.

For collectors, the Rio model offers not only a piece of American horological history but also an attractive and functional addition to their collection. Its rarity, coupled with its high-quality materials and intricate design, makes it a desirable find in the world of antique clock collecting.

Here it is folks-the “last” of the Seth Thomas “RIO’s”!!! Out of the collection that has made available five Seth Thomas “RIO” wall clocks, this is the final one that we will be able to offer from that source. The others all sold almost as soon as they were put onto our web site. This nice example has an original painted dial and a professionally cleaned and good running brass eight-day movement with a calendar mechanism. The movement strikes the hours on a coil gong. The case has been given an attractive ebony laquered finish. The painted dial is clean and attractive. I’ll keep looking for “RIOs” because they always appeal to our customers. But, I never found one before in our many years in the antique clock business and may not come upon another for years to come. Priced appropriately for for a quick sale to some lucky buyer.
