About the Seth Thomas “Whistling Boy” Clock

The “Whistling Boy” clock, crafted by the renowned Seth Thomas Clock Company in Thomaston, Connecticut around 1909, presents an intriguing blend of American craftsmanship and international design aesthetics. This figural mantel clock features a spring-driven, 8-day movement that provides both time and half hour strike functions. The clock’s distinctive feature is a whistling boy statue, which adds a charming touch to the overall design.

The clock’s spelter case, adorned with a Syrian bronze finish, still retains a substantial portion of its original finish. The porcelain dial remains in excellent condition, boasting no hairline cracks or chips, and the original hands continue to mark the passing hours accurately. The movement bears the signature of Seth Thomas Clock Co., attesting to its authenticity.

Though this clock may have undergone some cosmetic changes over time—such as an over-paint of gold on the case—it remains a captivating piece that showcases the craftsmanship and attention to detail for which Seth Thomas was known. This “Whistling Boy” clock, with its unique combination of style and functionality, continues to be a sought-after collectible in antique clock circles.
