Jan 2020 – 326 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Chime Clock No. 57”, ca. 1914. A 12-inch tall mahogany cabinet that has a severely crinkled varnish finish in need of restoration. It is 17.25 inches wide and 6.75 inches deep. The 6-inch convex silvered matte dial shows some wear and sits behind a beveled, convex glass. The clock is running and loves to chime on the four bells, so much that it will not stop chiming. If you are willing to pull the chime movement it is probably a simple fix. refinish the case while you are at it, and you will have a clock worth twice what you pay for it. C.1922, Seth Thomas, “Chime Clock No. 57” chiming Westminster quarters on 4 steel RODS, and in very good to excellent original condition.

This model came out in the 1920’s as a cheaper alternative to the Sonora units. It still has a very melodious sound and the original rods are intact. Very minor nicks to case; b’oth movements have been professionally cleaned and this clock is ready to enjoy. Width 17.5Ó, Height 11Ó $250-$350

The mahogany case has been refinished and there are a couple of runs in the finish. Biggest problem with this clock is it is a 5 bell case and bell set up that got separated from its original 5-bell movement, and a 4-bell movement is now in place. There are several extra holes inside the case to indicate that both movements have been changed. As these were factory produced clocks, the dimensions are basically the same, the mounting slightly different. This situation aside, the clock has a great dial and wonderful sound, chiming Westminster on the quarters. Best thing to do is enjoy this clock as is. Height 12″

Condition: Refinished mahogany case in generally good condition with a couple of dings and piece of veneer missing on the narrow flat edge just above the base. Original silvered dial is very clean for its age with only minor discoloration around the winding holes. Movements have not been serviced in a while, but are still ticking and chiming (nice tone). This clock is a one family item, consigned from a cottage in Maine where it has sat for some time. The finish has alligatored, but looks Ok to me, better than a refinish. The movements are both dirty and dry, it will eek out the Westminster tune, strike and tick, but sure wants a cleaning. Retains original dial, hands, pendulum, key and hardware. Jul 2021 – #249 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Corsair”, ca. 1962. “A genuine sea-going ship’s bell striking clock”, as described in the catalog. Ship’s bells, if you are a landlubber like me, make no sense whatsoever and just seem to strike random patterns at any time. The 5.75-inch case is in bright chrome with a silvered dial, and everything looks like new. The dial screws on and off to set the time and has a waterproof seal. The 7-jewel 8-day movement is running and striking at will. not have a proper key for the clock but will include a 5-pronged winder that will work. There is a name sticker on the back, and both the case and dial are signed. The Corsair had an optional base for an additional $10.95 if you did not plan on mounting it on your boat. Seth Thomas City Series clock, the “Dallas”, C. 1885.

This was one of the company’s early parlor clocks they named for western towns rather than eastern. This one plus the Austin and Carson were in small cases, using great wood selections, and they jazzed them up by using some metal on the front, plus a porcelain dial, a heavier brass bezel, beveled glass, and a different movement than the other City Series clocks. This 8 day movement is No. 5 1/2, outside count wheel, half hour bell strike on top of the movement, standing gong below. There is a great black full label inside and a factory stamp on the door, “5881A”, meaning the clock was made January 1885. This case is walnut, burl used on the front, stands only 13″ high. There are light hairlines in the porcelain dial; original glass needs to be fitted back into the bezel. Beyond my expertise. These 3 little clocks have always been difficult for the collectors to find. Ly-Seth Thomas #192.

Seth Thomas “Hanging Balltop”, or “Eclipse” wall clock, c. early 1900’s

Not pictured in any of the Seth Thomas catalogs which I have never understood. It was made in the very early 1900’s and they are not all that uncommon. I have seen 50 or more myself. The shelf model is pictured in Ly-Seth Thomas No.2080. The movements in all of them have been 8 day, strike and alarm, and not always the same type movement. This one is the Lyre style, No. 5 7/8, and an Eclipse pendulum. Runs very well. The movement feet moved from all 4 original holes.Walnut case, 27 1/2 inches high. Finials, glass, and inside label, all original. New paper dial on the old zinc pan I would call this case a variant as it is different than others I have seen. A small piece of the bottom spear was made to complete that one small piece of wood, and was made to match the 2 spears just above it. A very attractive Balltop.

This “no name” clock was not given a name until recently, and only then because of the name “Eclipse” cast on the pendulum bob. Most everyone called it a “hanging balltop”. Whatever it is, ST made it special for someone or some purpose. All the cases have a special label with a serial number on the door. This is the only model of the hundreds they made that had a special label with serial number. This walnut case is as nice and clean as any I have sold. It is 27″ high, complete, original, and in immaculate condition top to bottom. It has a complete label inside, correct “Eclipse” pendulum bob, original dial and hands, 8 day movement, coil gong, alarm movement and brass bell, and a near perfect glass. As good as they come. Although two books have been published on Seth Thomas clocks, the shelf or mantle “Eclipse” seems to elude publishers. Since it is one of the more popular of the Seth Thomas line, we wonder why there isn’t more information available on this handsome and elegant clock? This beauty has a solid Walnut case with the distinctive Eclipse five-ball top or crown. It includes an eight-day movement with a full strike on the hours and one strike each half-hour. The door glass is also original and in the unique ECLIPSE design. This is also true of the pendulum which has the name ECLIPSE impressed into the cast metal ‘bob’. The Seth Thomas Clock Company varied the pattern on their “Eclipse” door glasses and also on a few other minor details such as the door ‘catch’. On this clock, the door is released with a push-button as compared to the hook and eye on the other “Eclipse’ in our current stock. This clock has a wonderful solid Walnut case in near “Mint” condition. The gold door glass pattern is original and the movement runs and strikes properly. There is a working alarm mechanism which although rarely used by owners because they run continuously until completely wound down when set, adds to the value of the clock. Height: 24 in. This clock is not shown in the Seth Thomas sales catalogs and Tran Duy Ly doesn’t show it with the other shelf clocks, but put it in the back of his book with the dials. I have seen a hundred or more just like this one. They are very popular. This clock is 100% original, case never cleaned, full label on the backboard and another on the door that says, “No 5. 548”. They aren’t all alike, just like the other Seth Thomas shelf clocks aren’t alike. Walnut case, 26.5″ high, refinished and clean. One small chip on the top right trim. On several of the hanging balltops we have had, there has been a paper label on the inside of the door. This one says, “No. C. 807”. I have always had the feeling that was their code for 1907 or1908, the date it was made. This clock is correct and all original with the exception of a repainted dial. 8 day movement still has the Geneva stops in place, and movement needs to be oiled. Strikes the hours on a coil gong, alarms on a brass bell. Accessories are all brass.

Refinished walnut case is 27″ high, very clean with a rich walnut color. There was.a good deal of jig saw and router work by some skilled cabinet maker. Deep cut designs on every piece of wood. The base took a hit and broke in two different places. It has been repaired (glue) and is hard to see the breaks. 8 day lyre movement with original Geneva stops still in place. The movement strikes a coil gong and alarms on a brass bell. Eclipse pendulum, hanger, dial rings, alarm ring, bell, and movement, all clean and functioning properly. Paper dial was replaced when the case was refinished. There is a very nice label inside the case. This is another clock from storage, surely will need to be oiled. This one is a really good looking clock.

Seth Thomas, hanging “Eclipse”, or balltop, as most collectors calls them.

No one has given a logical explanation as to why Seth Thomas made the shelf and wall balltop’s. One picture of a shelf model is buried in the back of Tran Duy Ly’s Seth Thomas book in the “Movement Description” section. We have seen hundreds so we know they were a production clock. Several different movements were used in the balltop’s, this one has the large 8 day Lyre movement, No. 5 7/8, with Geneva stops still intact. It is time, strike on a large brass Cathedral gong, and alarms on a brass bell. Other brass accessories are the pendulum, hanger, dial rings, alarm set ring, beat scale, and all the hinges, latches, and hooks. The 27″ walnut case is all original, never cleaned. Seth Thomas mantle clock, a clock of many names, “Eclipse”, and “Balltop” are the most common, and both names fit the clock.

I have had dozens of this model and seen slight variations in many of them, most noticeably the top and side trim. A couple of things I should say first, the 24.5 inch walnut case has been beautifully restored, most anyone would be proud to display it. Secondly, there is a new paper dial on the old metal pan, expertly fitted, just the right color for the wood and original glass. All the metal has been cleaned and polished, the 8 day movement with strike and alarm is functioning properly. The numbers stamped on the case frame are “A2236”. If Seth followed their usual pattern that would translate to Jan 22, 1936, or something equally as brilliant. Ly-Seth Thomas, page 479.

The tablets show four of the celebrated battleships that took part in the famous peace cruise around the world in 1907-8-9. This near perfect oak case is 23 inches high. On the back is a factory stamp showing this clock made in 1915. There is a full label on the back that I have never seen before. It states that this clock is a “Souvenir of the World Peace Cruise”. 8 day movement strikes half hours and hours, and is running. Condition: Refinished walnut case in very clean condition. Original painted dial is flaking, has been varnished over and the varnish turned dark (needs re-painting). Hands and pendulum are original. Movement is properly signed. See Tran Ly’s Seth Thomas book, 3rd edition [2004], page 194 fig 545. Inside label is dark and unreadable; can see shadow of printing.. Height 24 inches [60.9 cm]

this attractive model has been nicely refinished, but the original glass tablet has wear and the metal trademark dial has lost about 15–20% of its paint. S/T hands look good, but were not offered on this model. Original heavy beveled edge pendulum. Ht 24″

oak case in clean condition with original finish, except on finial, which is a replacement. Original painted dial has some minor wear to some of the numbers. Hands and pendulum are original. Good label inside case with minor loss. A nice example of the Greek. Height 24 inches

Walnut case in nice original finish. The painted dial is in good condition with some infill to cover an area where paint loss occurred next to the winding arbor. The hands are original. The movement is signed and strikes on a bell. The glass is original. Ht 24″

The case currently has a dark finish. The dial mask board appears to have suffered some water damage. The case top finial is missing some of the dentils. The dial is a paper replacement. The hands appear original. The movement is signed. The door glass and stencilled design are original.
