Jan 2020 – 46 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 7”, 1888. The second-smallest Office Calendar, at 26.5 inches (behind the No. 3 “Peanut”). This one is very original. The glasses and hands are old, including the original calendar hand; the dials may have been repainted long ago as they are just too good to still be original paint, but they show a lot of age; the calendar roller paper covers are very dark, and the walnut veneer case shows no repairs and has all the decorative buttons. This one is time-only with a signed ST movement that is running effortlessly. The pendulum bob is a replacement. The calendar day is advancing but the date needs adjustment. Good labels inside, and a date stamp on the back (1888). About all you could ask for. The last one Horton’s sold was in July of 2018 for $610.

Office Calendar No. 7 is hard to distinguish from the larger No. 6; the No. 7 has smaller dials and is about 6 inches shorter. This 26.5-inch case is veneered in walnut or mahogany with an old finish and has a great patina. The glasses are old, the dials repainted, the hands correct. The signed 8-day time-only movement is running and the calendar is advancing. AAC sold one last January for $578.

The dials were repainted maybe 25 years ago over the original paint and are really flaking now; you have to strip down to the zinc and use a modern primer to avoid this malady. Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 7”, C. 1878.

Rosewood veneer case is 26.5″ high, with decorative attached buttons, top, bottom, and middle. The case is very similar to their No. 4 and No. 6 models. This case is almost perfect, no bad veneer, no repairs, all original. Key lock on the side. Two labels inside the case, the one on the door says the clock and calendar were set to running November 1, 1878. Original dials have not been repainted and have very little paint loss; however, years ago someone put a coat of varnish or wax on the dials. It has held the paint very good, but it also darkened them somewhat and gives the impression there are brush marks. They aren’t bad, and since the case is so nice I would sure live with the dials. 8 day, spring, striking hours on a large brass bell. Perpetual calendar is functioning and clock is running. Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 7”, C. 1878.

This No. 7 in some ways is a better clock than #64, but the rosewood veneer on #64 always looks better to me. This walnut veneer case is very nice, still with the original finish, a tiny veneer chip or two, scuffed on the bottom of the door, but no harm. This door has a hook on the side, where #64 has a key lock on the side. The biggest negative is that the case apparently split slightly around the lower hinge. It hasn’t been tinkered with and is not bad as is. I probably would not do anything. Dials look very good, color matches, but top dial was repainted at some time. Two excellent full labels. The one on the door says the clock was set to running on August 1, 1878. The case is 26.5″ high. Movement is 8 day, strikes hours on a large brass bell, perpetual calendar is working properly. Seth Thomas Clock Co. “Regulator No. 14”, ca 1879.

Well, it sure looks identical to the picture of the No.14. A very good cabinetmaker decided he wanted a floor clock like the Seth No.14, and he made it. This clock is 97 inches high, made of walnut and burl walnut veneer. The clock is nice enough for my house and I have seen the day I would have given anything for a clock this nice, but to be honest, if I were going to keep it I would have a good cabinetmaker spend some time sanding and rubbing to get a little slicker finish. On close examination you can see that it is not slick like the Seth Thomas factory would have made. There is a door lock, 4 side glasses, and the large door glass. The top is removable for easier moving. The movement is fastened to an iron bracket. There are no markings on the movement, dial, or pendulum. They are not old nor are they new. The previous owner says he owned it 30 years and I would guess the movement and case to be 30 to 50 years old. It is 8 day with sweep second hand, Graham dead beat escapement, maintaining power, 1 large brass weight, and a very heavy gridiron pendulum. The great looking dial has etched designs allover, silver dial ring, and raised brass numerals. My guess is they all came together when the clock was made. Today I don’t think you could buy a new movement, dial, and pendulum this nice. Ly-Seth Thomas, page 200. An original No.14 would cost you over 20,000 dollars today. My estimate .

Seth Thomas Clock Co., Thomaston, Conn, “REGULATOR No. 14”, floor standing jeweler’s regulator in walnut, with mercurial compensated pendulum, hinged storage in base, and with center sweep seconds hand, from the Bob Wasserman collection, c1892 (dated), No. 170.

a nice and clean all original clock, even down to a fine white outline along the case edge, where the wall was painted behind it [shows only on the closest inspection]. A further description of this model can be found in all Tran Ly’s Seth Thomas books, see pages 404 and 406 of 3rd edition for case and movement details. The heavy engraved silvered dial is missing some of its numeral wax, and with some wear and discoloration. The high quality movement is dated Oct. 26, 1892, with ST logo and number 170. Note it retains original striped pattern on the plates (inside and outside) and original lacquer (with minor losses to lacquer). Graham style anchor with jeweled pallets and jeweled ‘scape wheel arbor. Glass thumbprint jar on the pendulum is excellent. Note mercury is held in a lexan jar outside the auction hall. Like all clocks from Milanville, this one is in good running order. Has original ST nickel plated crank with wooden knob. Photos tell much of the story of this fine clock; pictured in place in the Wasserman home. The full provenance of this clock is included in a frame; Bob purchased it on the internet for $28,100, from Edna Greenhaw, whose husband had purchased it around 1965 for $50 from Wood’s Jewelry Store (George Hammond Wood) in Athens, Alabama. Note that the price new in 1890 was $360. Ly price guide for 2005 = $40,000. Ht 100″

Interestingly the movements in this model bear a serial number, this one 585; the one in Ly’s reference book is No. 481. Ht 58.5″
