This clock has a nice clean case with ever so minor corner abrasion; original finish has gone a little dull, but will polish up nicely. Seth Thomas “Wales” clock.

A very nice little clock with a solid Oak case in a good original finish. There is one small nick on one corner and the rest is perfect. It has a signed porcelain dial which has no chips or hairlines, just a bit of roughness around one winding arbor. The bezel is heavy cast brass and there is a convex beveled glass. It has the original hands, key and pendulum. This is an 8 day clock with hour and half hour strike on a resonant cathedral gong. The works will need cleaning before it will run. 10″ tall.

10.75 inches high mahogany cabinet case with ripple molding around the top, brass feet. 4 inch convex porcelain dial under a cast sash and a beveled glass. Neither the wood nor brass has ever been cleaned that we can tell. A really nice clean case. Little hairlines around one wind arbor, nothing serious. 8 day round movement, hour and half hour rack strike on a Cathedral Bell. Factory date on the base but I can’t decipher exactly. Been in storage several years, will no doubt need service, even though it is trying to run. Ly-Seth Thomas, page 283.

A later variant from 1895 showcases double columns on either side of the dial and applied metal trim below the dial. This clock is in very good original condition, except for replaced hands. Standing at 11 inches tall, it is an attractive addition to any collection.

Lastly, a Seth Thomas “ADAMANTINE” mantel clock from 1896 features an embossed brass dial and stands at approximately 11 inches tall. This particular clock was found in storage and requires cleaning for both the movement and the adamantine

C.1816, Seth Thomas, Plymouth, Conn., rare wooden works, Terry patent “Box Clock” in excellent condition.

The only noted replacements on this clock are the painted numerals and spandrel decorations on the reverse of the original glass, and NONE of the 9 known examples of this model has the original paint intact on the tablet. The clock is otherwise original, right down to the finish on the case. Rack and snail strap wood movement is sound and the label is excellent; retains original weights with integral pulleys. This box form, with the dial painted on the reverse of the glass, is the earliest model of Connecticut wooden shelf clocks, and is the rarest as well. Note the engraved label states that the clock was patented by Eli Terry, but made and sold by Seth Thomas. Since Terry’s patent was granted on June 12, 1816, this clock may date a few months earlier or later than June 12. Recall that Seth Thomas had worked closely with Terry since 1806. The sister to this clock is illustrated in Ken Roberts’ book on Eli Terry, pages 46-47. This clock was in the collection of Chet Durfee until 1952, and owned by Haddon Kirk from 1952 until now. See Distin and Bishop, page 108. One of the finest examples known, and certain to attract special attention. Height 20″

Seth Thomas 8 bell Sonora “Chime Clock No. 20”, ca 1909.

This is the top of the line, and the largest at 18″ high, of the “Real Bronze” cases. The base, under my lights, is a slightly different shade of bronze than the top. It was not a cleaning or polishing that changed the shading, it is just the way the bronze cases look. This clock came with the 500-clock Texas collection last year. It was one of the best clocks in the collection and is the last clock to be photographed. I tried to talk myself into keeping it, as I always wanted an eight bell in this exact case. It is clean as a pin inside, and like everything in this collection, it is operating perfectly. There are a few rubs and a couple of dings, but nothing worth singling out for you to worry about as they are insignificant. The Time movement is No. 89M, and the chime movement is No. 104A. The large back door still has the original cloth covering the open pierced section. Two levers on the side, one sets Westminster or Whittington chimes, the other sets the silent-chime. To acquaint you with the Sonora Chime clocks, read Tom Chapell’s article in Ly-Seth Thomas, pages 206-211. This clock is No. 703 in that book.

restored (see Ly no. 968 in Seth Thomas book). This is a Civil War era clock and these OG bottoms are hard to find. This model might not please everyone, as it has been completely re-veneered, top to bottom, and there are some “waves” in the veneer. Any one who has tried veneering knows that it is a tough job. The dial has been professionally painted, and with new “S-T” hands. Retains a great Plymouth Hollow label. Just cleaned, running and ready to enjoy. Height 9 inches
