Seth Thomas Peking City Series Model, c. 1885

Having a signed movement with the ST ‘Geneve Stops’. The hour hand only makes one complete revolution in 24 hours. In 12 hours, the hour hand on this clock goes from the top to the bottom, generally only six hours on a normal clock. Then from 1 am to 12 midnight, the hour hand travels from the normal six positon to the normal twelve position. It strikes the hour on the half hour also. It is in good running condition, and strikes fine. The clock is 18 inches high with a 7 inch diameter dial. It is missing just a little gesso on the columns. Nice glass in the bottom panel.

time only, in rosewood. The veneer is in wonderful condition with no visible veneer damage, although some is loose, and minor loss on rear of bottom bracket so be careful how you pick it up. Both glasses are original. The dial, hands, pendulum and iron weight are original. The tablet has a great spider web of background, some paint loss, and some small losses to the gold. Best part is the superior label on weight baffle. Cord needs replacing. An extra nice example. Height 44 inches

Condition: the rosewood veneer is still exceptional on this particular clock; the original finish over-coated to fill in some minor blemishes. The dial was professionally repainted in 1977. The inside of the case with the ink stamp impression of John Tanner of California; although it has changed hands since, it was part of his collection at one time. The original gold leaf tablet with some minor re-backing. For reference, see Tran Ly’s book on Seth Thomas, 3rd Edition [2004], page 272. this clock was purchased from John Delaney around 1990. The veneer has several bubbles, and is missing entirely in several small places, stained in so as not to show. The dial is original with several flakes around the circumference, and several other flakes curling up and ready to fall off. The label and tablet are outstanding. Also retains original printed paper beat scale. This striking movement has maintaining power and was designed by S. B. Terry. Mov’t is very clean; needs re-stringing. Ht 44″

The rosewood case has been refinished. The veneered case bottom is replaced. The baffle board which originally had a label is replaced. The dial has been repainted and the hands are new. Both door glasses are original with the lower gilt design rebacked with black paint. The gilt pendulum rod is original as is the pendulum bob which shows the copper content of the earlier Seth Thomas bobs.

These early regulators used the SB Terry round, 8 day, time only movements I would think this case would have had a Plymouth Hollow label originally Some restoration has been done from time to time The sliding partitions were removed from many of these early clocks because the pendulum and weight are very difficult to hang if the partition is in place This partition and label are modern replacements The top glass has been replaced but the important one with the gold paint, is near perfect Like most all Seth Thomas dials, this one has been professionally repainted No doubt some veneering has been done but the false graining is excellent and makes it almost impossible to see any veneer repairs The flat weight that descends behind the partition is a good replica of the early ones 41 inch rosewood veneer case has a special key lock on the bottom door

Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 1 – Extra”, C. 1865.

Rosewood veneer case is 41.5″ high, where the early catalogs touted them as 44″. The veneer is almost perfect, especially when compared to a dozen or so others I have sold, and the large number I have seen other places. There is a small nick on the right side of the bezel and some loose veneer on the base. You wouldn’t know it unless you carry the clock, then you feel it. This case inside and out is almost clean enough to say it has never been on the wall. No coal or tobacco smoke inside or out. The large 14.5″ zinc dial was repainted at least 50 years ago. The black paper label and white paper beat scale that are glued to the sliding partition, are the best I have ever seen. The tablet is original but the black paint has some re-backing. The gold always seems to hold to the glass. The round eight day movement is attributed to S. B. Terry. Seth Thomas continued to make them after they bought Terry’s old stock. The original flat iron weight descends down the middle of the case behind the sliding partition. Wood pendulum rod has the original gold, while the old bob got in the hands of an overenthusiastic polisher. Most of the brass has been buffed off leaving the copper undercoat. It isn’t the end of the world, but honestly is about the only negative thing I can say about this clock. Ly-Seth Thomas, pages 108-109.

Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 1 Extra”, ca 1860.

The round movement was either purchased from the creditors of Silas B. Terry in 1859, or made from the patterns purchased at the same time. The round 8 day, time only movements were used a short time before they went to the rectangle movements. The old zinc dial pan is original and has been professionally repainted. The gold around the glass and the gold painted wood stick, brass bob, and glasses, are also original. The sliding partition where a label should be has been added. It looks fine, hides the descending weight, but nonetheless there is no label. Rosewood veneer case like 99% of the octagon bezel clocks has had some minor repairs and I notice one small chigger bite that should be stained or a tiny piece of veneer put on. The base is a remake, well done, veneered to match. The catalogs say this model clock should be 44 inch. I have probably had 20 over the years, none were over 41.5 inch, same as this one. This is the clock pictured on page 273 of Tran Duy Ly’s “Seth Thomas Clocks & Movements- Third Edition- Volume 1”. The case is in very good condition with limited veneer loss on the base and on the left side of the bezel.. The original painted dial is in good condition except for some loss at 6. The hands are period. The seconds hand is proper style, but may be replaced. The case interior has a maroon flocking in the bottom portion. The paper beat indicator is original. Period embossed pendulum bob . The door glass is period but may have been taken out of the door to be rebacked. Walnut examples are less common than rosewood ones.

The case is in very nice condition with very little veneer loss. The case has been refinished and the dial repainted. The pillow base has apparently been reconstructed, but not in the proper form. The lower tablet glass is replaced and the gilt band surrounding the lower glass is overpainted. The upper door glass is original. The hands are original. The sliding weight baffle inside the case is present, but the label originally on it is missing. A smaller board below the baffle is missing, thus no beat scale remains.

this as found clock is not for the faint at heart, but can come to life. It has no pendulum or weight. [weight cord goes up over a roller in the case top and down the right side, with a square bottom iron weight about 6 inches long] The rosewood veneered case has substantial veneer losses to the lower door and upper bezel. The original dial is very dirty, and with flakes, but the Dial House could clean and restore without repainting. Left quarter gilt molding is lacking from lower door. Bottom left OG return is missing as are both corbel shaped side pieces. The black & gilt tablet is missing. The original keystone failed and there is an envelope with some parts that could be modified to fit. For a similar clock in good condition, see Tran Duy Ly’s “Seth Thomas Clock & Movements” Vol. 1, p. 273 (although the c1880 date shown there is too late as the Regulator No. 3 replaced this model in 1879). An nice clock, but challenging project for the patient restorer. Ht 44″

The upper door glass is original and the lower tablet has excellent, original gilt design with minor loss of black backing. The pendulum rod has original gilt finish. The weight baffle boards have been repainted and do not have the Seth Thomas label or the beat indicator scale. Overall this is a very sharp looking example of this model. Ht 41″.

Antique Seth Thomas Regulator No. 6 Clock

Jan 2020 – 76 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 6”, ca. 1880. A 48-inch walnut case from the 1880’s (not a reissue) with a few small faults. The dial has a significant loss from chipping at the 2 position; there are lots of pinpoint chips as well, and there is fading and minor warping. 2. The top of the door is split and warping outward. This could be fixed by a guy with some wood glue and a clamp, I think. Minor issues: The dial ring is nickel but the ST weight and pendulum bob are brass, and I’m not 100% sure that the bob is ST issue; these clocks often had damascened bobs.  Those dents on the left side of the bob, but unfortunate reflections. The ball tip is broken off the lower right finial. The walnut case has a great finish, clean and clear. The door glass is old and wavy. The finials are all present and correct. It has an unsigned No. 2 movement, 8-day, time-only, that is running without issue. All three hands are correct. Horton’s sold a similar example in July of 2019 for $1300. $1200-$1500. Jan 2021 – 78 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 6”, 1885. A beautiful walnut case, 49 inches long, with an old patina. The door glass is old but likely replaced, the dial likely an old repaint with the ST logo and name. hands are correct. The dial bezel is nickel, as is the weight, pulley, and damascened pendulum bob. The unsigned, 8-day time-only movement will run for about 10 minutes before stopping and will need service. There is an old black label on the bottom inside, and the date of manufacture stamped on the back. These clocks have been selling for around $1000 as of late. $600-$1000.

is a fine original example in cherry. There are minor age cracks on the door at the top and bottom. The dial is perfect, perhaps the best Seth Thomas we’ve seen (they are known for flaking) along with the original hands, pendulum (with damascene pattern) and weight. C.1885, Seth Thomas, Regulator No. 6, Double Time, incomplete.

It’s always a mystery why folks get frustrated with unusual clocks and toss part of the pieces away, but that’s what happened here. The lower bracket, dial, motion works and shaft, as well as the top bevel gear are all missing. Holes in the back of the case remain where the bracket was. I see two options here: remake the dial mask and turn it into a regular No. 6, or find a friend in Texas (where most of these seem to be) to copy the parts you need for second dial. The oak case itself is crisp and beautiful; dial with minor wear. If original this would have been worth $5000. Height 49 inches

This is an oak case model that is nicely refinished. You more often see this model in walnut or cherry. For a Seth Thomas, the original dial is quite clean, but has darkened a little from age (remarkably it is not flaking). There is a nice old piece of glass in the door. The hands, weight and all case hardware are original. Movement has been re-cabled. Height 49″

Condition: this clock has had a hard life, and will respond to restoration. The door has had the very bottom cross molding replaced, and needs re-doing. The bottom finial is missing. The case has been refinished with spar varnish and will need proper refinishing after the door repair. The vertical strips that support the dial have been replaced, and they were installed around 3/16 too deep, so the dial surround is set deeper into the case than it should be, with the result that the hands seem too far out from the dial. This is relatively easy to correct. Movement needs cleaning, does run OK. Original dial is good, only few flakes. Pendulum dent on side. Would be $3500 if complete and original. Ht [without lower finial] 44.5″

Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 6”. This clock is number 217, of 4000, reissued by Seth Thomas in the 1970’s.

A label inside carries the serial number. The quality of the clocks is typical Seth Thomas and it is identical to the originals made 100 years earlier. They used select walnut, a quality grade of brass, and the same movement, 8 day time only- and signed. We had the movement checked; it is running and should provide many years of maintenance free service. The case is 49 inches long, excellent condition throughout. Typical brass weight does not show in the picture, but like everything else, it is perfect. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 391.

A model we don’t see very often. The case was also used for a calendar version, which we do see occasionally. This clock is 8 day, time only, 1 weight, and running. Brass accessories are the pendulum ball, weight, pulley, locks, and bezel. The beat scale is nickel. Dial has been repainted, with the ST logo and seconds dial. We rarely see one that has not been repainted. A good black label inside on the base. The movement is the same one used in the old reliable Seth Thomas No.2’s, strong, well finished plates, secured to an iron bracket, Graham dead beat escapement, 80 beats to the minute, has maintaining power. 49 inch walnut case has the original finish that has some crazing. Burl walnut was used on the top and base. The clock is not perfect or mint, but plenty nice. No repairs or substitutions on the case are visible. Ly-Seth Thomas No.391.

Seth Thomas, “Regulator No. 6″, C. 1884. The walnut case is 48″ tall and 16.75” wide.

The locking door has the original old glass. The inside backboard has some small skinned places where Bubba hauled the clock with the weight and pendulum still inside the case. One top finial has about 1/8″ missing from the tip, and one bottom finial has been nicely retipped. The base has had some veneer repairs, and the overall finish shows it has not lived in a controlled environment. Heat and cold, smoke and tars, working together, and not having furniture polish and oils applied occasionally have hurt the finish maybe 10%. Not a big thing and can probably be brought back with some elbow grease. The old style, rectangular plate, 8 day, time only movement is clean and a strong runner. The old dial was professionally repainted, the hands are old but probably not original to this clock. The pendulum stick and hardware are contemporary, the weight is an old replacement, and the silvered beat scale is original and in good condition. Ly-Seth Thomas #368, #391. $3000-$4000.

It is the same scale 48-49″ high, same finials, dial, pendulum ball, beat scale, door locks, movement, etc. Double side locks, label on the base signifying it was made by Seth Thomas and showing it is #480 of 4000. The No. 2 style movement is marked, “S T 61 A414-000 7801”. I am sure this clock has not been on the wall since it was made, more than likely in a box under the bed. It looks like it was made yesterday. I have had it in my den a few months (left the originals in the basement) and I would recommend it be oiled before extended use. Well constructed of the best materials, good walnut wood, good strong brass as used in their movements 100 years ago. It is completely original; almost 49″ high, clean, brass polished, has been well protected and cared for by the original owner. The movement is 8 day, 1 weight and signed like all their reissues with a large “ST” then the numbers, “61 – A414-000 – 7706”. The movement is the same style as used in the 1884 No. 6 Regulators. This is a really fine clock that retains the original finish with some crazing, burl walnut appropriately used on the top and base. It stands 49″ high, has no repairs or new wood, and other than some minor nicks made by Bubba when he moved the clock, it is as nice and original as we ever see. It should please some Seth Thomas collector. The movement is 8 day, weight driven, time only, and runs beautifully. It is the same movement that is used in the Reg. No. 2, with strong well finished plates that is secured to an iron bracket. It has Graham dead beat escapement, 80 beats to the minute, has maintaining power. All brass accessories include the pendulum ball, weight, pulley, locks, and bezel. The beat scale is nickel. Typical of ST regulators the dial has been repainted with a seconds dial and the ST logo. On the inside base is a good black label. We previously owned this clock and a couple of other No. 6’s back when they were bringing around $3000, now we find them selling for $4000 and up.
