The company said this case is, “embossed, metal case gilded and lacquered”. The case body as usual is tarnished but should clean and polish nicely. The embossed sections are bands around the top and base. There are four beveled glasses, two with a corner chip. Porcelain dial is signed, clean brass dial ring, hands are correct, and there is a good imitation mercury pendulum. Round 8 day movement, outside count wheel, it is running and striking half hours on a Cathedral gong. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 716.

The case has a bronze top and base with raised gold ornaments, polished brass frames around the four beveled glasses, and stands 11 inches tall. One tiny corner chip on the back glass. Round movement, enclosed spring barrels, signed by ST, running strong. One piece, signed, porcelain dial, has a dirty hairline from 10 to 1. As you know, an ultrasonic bath would help it immensely. Jan 2020 – 35 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Garfield”, 1886. “Stately” is barely sufficient to describe this clock, 30 inches high in mahogany, with an old finish. The top surface shows more wear, but all the finials are there. The Garfield came with nickel or brass trim and most collectors prefer the dial bezel, gong mount, pendulum bob and weights to match. the catalog description from 1883 notes that it came with “Brass weights and bell nickel plated”, so matching was not a manufacturer stipulation (See Ly, Seth Thomas Clocks & Movements , Vol. 2, page 727.) Here we have all brass trim and weights with a damascened nickel bob. The dial has an old coat of paint, possibly original, that is chipping in places; the hands are correct. door glass is wavy. The signed movement is correct to this model and is running and striking without issue. black label in the bottom. Horton’s sold one last July for $1275. $1200-$1600.

Jan 2020 – 100 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Garfield”, ca. 1883. This classic, weight-driven shelf clock is 30 inches high, named after the second US president to be assassinated, in 1881. The case is walnut in an old if not original finish and with a nice amount of “patina”. The glass is original, the dial repainted long ago; the hands are original, as is the pendulum and bob. The dial trim, weights, and damascened pendulum bob are nickel-plated; the weights and bob could use a bit of polish and the weights do not match but I have been assured they are Seth Thomas issue (one hook has been changed). A decent label inside on the bottom, no date on the back of the case. The movement is correct to this model and is running but would benefit from service. Jul 2021 – #33 Antique American Clocks Seth Thomas “Garfield”, ca. 1883. An impressive 30-inch mahogany case with an 8-day, weight-driven A classic, always sought-after, and the match to the equally popular, but slightly more common Lincoln. the finish is a bit worn and could benefit from a bit of rejuvenation, whether it is a fresh varnish or just a good waxing. The door glass is old and likely original. The dial is likely an old repaint as it lacks the ST logo; the hands are correct. The ST A-frame movement is signed and running, striking the hours on the cathedral gong. The pendulum bob is not correct. The trim is nickel but the weights, which are not ST weights, are brass. I can live with brass weights, but the bob has got There are the required four pulleys but no label and no date on the back. Can’t have everything, but you can have this clock with the right bid. The dial has been professionally repainted. Finish on the case is original, hardware intact, and with good pattern on pendulum. The are the remains of a label in the bottom of the case. Seth Thomas Clock Co. rare and unusual mantle clock, “Garfield”, ca 1883.

ST made the Lincoln and Garfield models to commemorate the only two Presidents to be assassinated at that time. The case styles are slightly different, but behind the door the internal parts are near identical. We have sold 2-3 dozen of the Lincoln/Garfield clocks and I want to tell you the factory did not use the same equipment on every clock. Sometimes you may have brass weights, a nickel pendulum, brass dial rings, or vice versa. 125 years ago the companies were not hung up on making every clock the same. This clock is correct and all original except the original metal dial has been repainted and the case cleaned and polished. The Garfield is 29″ high, made of walnut, and has a damascened pendulum, correct weights, hands, and all other accessories. The movement is 8 day, running, and striking on the heavy duty Cathedral gong. Ly-Seth Thomas, pages 726-727.

Condition: Cherry case in sound with original finish, but with replacements. Feet are not original. The left sidepiece on the base has been replaced. The top to the case was missing and has been replaced with a cove molding and flat top. Original painted dial is exceptional for its age. Hands are original. Pulleys are replacements. Nice damascene pendulum. Weights are original. The original backboard is missing its very back layer of veneer, and some ragged edges of the bits left. We rarely see this model in oak, it was refinished with a high luster. Accessories all polished and shining bright, nickel pendulum, gong, dial ring, brass beat scale, and brass weights. The old glass looks to be original. The inside label is suspect, it may be a mail order label. I can understand putting a new label in the case if you are restoring a rare clock. Weights are compounded to insure running 8 days. Several old holes, rotten places, in the backboard, filled and finished over and looks very nice.Movement is signed, strikes a cathedral gong on the hours. The new dial pan was recently painted, the dial board and the blocks holding the dial board in place, are all new. Restoration was professionally done. Clock is original and complete except where noted. Ly-Seth Thomas No.1001 (No.1004 has the same movement, gong, etc.)

This clock came from a barn in Rochester, NH. The repairman managed to get on new cord, but used a punch to close in the bushings. The oil has dried and the movement is sluggish. Replacement weights seem OK. The walnut case is sound and complete with old finish; orig dial shows wear and flakes around 4. Original damascene pendulum perfect. Careful restoration will produce a nice clock; height 27′

The only item that keeps this from being excellent is a replaced return molding on the upper left side; it has been made with an improper shape, although only a collector would notice. The case is in very nice condition with original finish; note the oak has an “old oak” finish with some age and from a distance looks like walnut. The original painted dial is quite nice with a little paint loss in the center. The hands, weights, pendulum and pulleys are original, one weight has lost its original hook and the bottom has a dent. The door glass is original; there is a worn Seth Thomas label in the case bottom. Height 27 inches

Seth Thomas “Lincoln VP”, ca 1886. Made in walnut and ebony, which was very poplar in the late 1800’s.

I see many Lincoln’s where the ebony was removed or an attempt was made to remove. You can always tell. It is our experience the collectors would rather have an original case, no matter the wood. This model uses the heavy trapezoid 8-day movement that is running, striking hours on a patented cathedral gong that has a deep resonating sound. They are always weight driven and came with nickel or brass accessories; this one has brass. Note the weights are slightly different size. I have seen two or three dozen of this model and half had weights slightly different size. This original case is 27 inches high, dial flaking slightly, has a beat scale. Seth Thomas mantle clock, “Lincoln. V.P.”, ca 1886, this particular clock was made in 1892 according to the factory stamp on the back of the clock.

I am sure you know that the V.P. stands for Visible Pendulum. The movementused in this model was the 8 day, weight, their number “14-1/2”, strikingonly the hours, on a Cathedral Bell. Pendulum ball, dial rings, gong, beatscale, and large weights, are all brass. Oak case is 27 inches high, stillwith original finish. Some flaking of the dial which is typical for SethThomas dials. This is another clock from the collection of “all original”clocks.

A factory stamp on the back indicates the clock was made 1883. Good walnut case is 27″ high. This clock should not need anything except to clean off many years of grime with a mild cleaner, feed the wood, and clean and oil the movement. It has been in storage for many years. Not only is this a large and well made clock, but only the best was used by ST inside. 8 day trapezoid movement strikes hours on a Cathedral Bell. All the accessories are matching, brass weights, pulleys, pendulum bob, gong base, beat scale, and dial ring. Other than the small things mentioned the stick has been broken and repaired. This was near the end of Seth Thomas’ effort to compete head on with the French onslaught of clocks that were pouring into New York and Boston harbors; dial on this is signed simply Seth Thomas, as they were using up the “Sons” movements that were left over after they were absorbed into the Seth Thomas Clock Co. in 1879.
