Weight clock, similar in a lot of ways with the mainstay mantle clock, the OG clock. This clock is very similar to No. 496 as it is also made of rosewood veneer, shell columns, gold capitals and bases. I can almost call the clock perfect. The gold is about 100 percent. There are a couple of tiny veneer chips that you have to look hard to find. And I am in doubt about the lower glass, so I will call it a replacement. Signed brass movement strikes a coil gong, runs good. The old zinc dial has held the paint much better than we normally see on aSeth Thomas dial this old, and someone has touched up a half dozen chipped places. The old clock actually looks very good. Fantastic full label, a pair of period weights, brass pendulum and key. Ly-Seth Thomas No. 989.

Cornice Shelf Clock with restoration. This is a rosewood model, with some veneer repairs, and has been attractively refinished. The original faux shell columns show some wear, and there are some veneer chips on the base. The two beautiful tablets have been professionally restored (+ fresh black on rear). The cornice has had some veneer replaced on both the ogive and the straights. Main detraction is a dial that has been touched up with a black brush too wide. Has a very clean label, including full operating instructions, plus an attest that it was bought new in January 1867. Height 32 inches

in generally fair condition, with restorations. This clock’s case has very good grain painted columns and over painted gilt capitals and bases (although the columns are upside down). The lower door has a very nice original reverse tablet with parrots (some background is lifting and flaking). The dial and hands are proper style, but new. The movement is an early brass Seth Thomas 8-day lyre plate movement, but 10 to 20 years older than this case. The later cornice top is not correct and needs to be re-done. There has been considerable re-veneering on the case, but it has been done well and mainly needs finish. Label legible, with some losses. Height 32Ó $350-$450

Very early Plymouth Hollow label, clock is complete and almost perfect. Great glass has been rebacked, original shell columns with gold capitals and bases. 25 inch case has a very small amount of veneer repair, a couple of tiny corner nicks. The worse thing I can find is some pretty fair repairs to the old metal dial. 30 hour weight clock, striking, and runs.

/strike wall clock, in walnut. This clock is in original as-found condition, no effort has been made to clean or restore the clock in any way. The original painted dial has a light coat of nicotine (we wouldn’t touch it). The hands and nickel damascene pendulum are original. The extra large movement is stamped “Suez” on the cross bar, plus patent dates of 1875. The door glass is original; label inside. The one minor defect is the pendulum rating assembly broke off and the bob is simply glued on to the stick. These parts are available from Timesavers. This is how you like to find them. 44 inches

Condition: Case in very clean condition with original finish. Original painted dial has some paint loss (will need restoring). Hands and nickel-plated damascened pendulum are original. There is a small chip missing from the left topside molding and the right top corner. There is a small decorative square block missing the left corner of the top crest. The right side exists that can be used as a pattern. The right bottom drop is missing a very small tip that can be restored. Nice clean label inside case. A hard to find clock that will respond to minor restoration. For reference, see Ly’s Seth Thomas book [2004] page 328; Ly gives a value of $3,500. Height 44 inches

Still, this is a wonderful original example of the Suez model, retaining original finish, nicely rubbed to soft sheen. The case style is not one we see often, in fact, I never have. It took a hit or two in the ride from Texas. I touched 3-4 small nicks with a red mahogany pencil stain and now the nicks are hard to find. The 8 day movement is running up a storm, striking the half hours on a cathedral bell. Convex dial and convex glass. The catalogs call the dial a “New convex 5-inch dial”. It is different, I guess paint on metal, but typical of Seth Thomas dials, it is beginning to flake in the lower half. Movement is signed with the ST logo and “89”. Ly-Seth Thomas #1257.

Condition: Rosewood veneered case in good condition, attractively re-finished. There is a small piece of veneer missing on the right side bottom edge and a small ding on the back edge. Dial paper has been replaced, however the dial pan is not lined up properly with the movement and it is difficult to wind.. Hands are original. Partial label on the back. Movement is signed. Condition: Rosewood veneered case is in very clean condition with original finish. There is a veneer repair on the left side bottom and a little damage on the left side back edge. Paper dial was pasted over flaking paint a long time ago and appears to be 80+ years old. Hands are original. Movement is signed. Fragment of a label on the back. 8-day time with separate alarm. Most of the rosewood veneer on the case is good condition, but there is a filled in repair on the door and veneer loss on the base; an attractive base molding (1/8 inch) has been added that looks fine and could be removed if you are a purist. As typical of Seth Thomas dials this is also flaking and will need restoration. There is a clean label in the case. This clock uses movement described as 9A-T in Owen Burt’s cottage clock literature, a bit more desirable than the 30 hour versions. (Note bell removed temporarily for foto of label.) Clean and running. Height 10 inches

chiming the quarter hours on 8 patent Sonora Resonated bells. This is a LARGE and impressive clock, the mahogany case with inlay on the front. Case retains original crazed finish and will “rub-out” nicely. 8″ silvered dial is good. Although the 2 movements have not been serviced in a while, they are both in operating order.
